Hey, I recently, well in May, purchased a silencer from John's Guns. I ordered the AR platform, actually I just ordered the upper, I am going to put it on a Black Rain Ordinance lower with 2 stage trigger.

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this make of silencer? Good? Bad? I did some research but for a internally suppressed rifle, and found little to nothing. Does anyone have an internally suppressed ar?

Reason I went with internally suppressed is as follows:
-taking a suppressor on and off effects acuracy (POI shift), and as I am going to use this for varmit eradication solution, i want an accurate repeatable rifle everytime
-only pro of a detachable is ability to use on many rifles, which is a big one considering the pain in the a$$ to get one at all
-I only have one 223 and dont plan on getting another
-I want to use this for varmit hunting and dont always have ear muffs. I also dont want to always have to connect/disconnect the detachable
-I dont have an ar so i got the silencer on an upper and got to build a lower to my specs

Anyways, any and all thoughts will be appreciated. I ordered it in May like I said and the wait has been a litte itty bit longer than I thought just for the construction. I not even started the background check yet. I wish I would have done a little more research before I ordered it, but I cant say no to an impulse buy.

UPDATE: 08.09.11

Got the suppressor in last friday. Shot it and was very satisfied. Need to run it through the chrony to see what the numbers are. Just shot it at beer cans at 50 yards. No discernable POI yet. This is going to be my varmint rifle, as I never remember to bring ear plugs while hunting and hate having ringing ears after a shot or 2. These 223's really bark.

Anyways, some specs:

Barrel: 16" 1/9 Twist - wish I woulda went at least a 1/7, but too late now.
Suppressor: 12" long
Length from barrel to end of suppressor: 21" (so suppressor overlaps barrel 7")
Weight: 11.5 lbs for complete rifle

and now some pics:

Overall, shooting sounded similiar to a .22, maybe a bit louder, but very comparable. I also shot it into a hill which could have reflected a lot of sound. I shot some subs as well for shits and giggles. All you hear is the action cycle. Not enough to chamber a new round though.

Next to throw on some krylon and finish the sighting in process. (I broke in the barrel by shooting 40 rounds on two separate visits to my range. I have yet to clean it.)

Another pro of a detachable can is that the gun could be used for other purposes, like hunting game animals. I'm not sure about Colorado but, in Texas, using a suppressed weapon isn't legal for game animals. Depending on the Game Warden's mood, possession of a supressed weapon, in the woods, during deer season, might result in a ticket regardless of your intentions. You also couldn't loan the gun to a friend...but that's NOT necessarily a bad thing! LOL.

Either way, you could always buy another upper and just swap them out.

Good Luck!

Re: John's Guns Suppressors

yea can allowed, but I want it for varmit calling/hunting (coyotes, bobcats, etc) and not anything bigger. my current ar upper barks louder than shiv w/o ear plugs, and my 22-250 is also super loud.

I just hope the length and front heavy is not too unbearable.

And i was planning on mybe a 6.5 grendal for a switch upper. that way, I will have my EoTech on the silenced 223 for close range, and put a decent 3-9 luppy on my long range grendal...that would be a hot combo...but gotta save a bit after the silenced 223 upper...

UPDATE!!

Just received my upper/suppressor assembly couple weeks ago to my FFL, sent in the paperwork, and check cleared this week.

The upper/suppressor is quite interesting. The barrel has 4 holes drilled in it to bleed off velocity/gasses and the suppressor, about 12" long, is a 2 pt connection type. It overlaps the barrel about 6 inches, right over the drilled holes. Will try to get pics. The barrel is contoured for the suppressor. Cant wait to shoot it.

I put the upper on a Black Rain Ordnance Lower with 2-stage rra trigger kit and vltor stock. When I got the upper home, I promptly kryloned the whole rifle. Am quite pleased with the setup as a whole. This is going to be my dedicated predator/calling rifle as I am sick of my ears ringing all day with one shot and no hearing protection.

Will give another update when I have the suppressor in my possesion!!

Re: John's Guns Suppressors

The suppressor is detachable, which is good and bad. Good cause I dont have to keep it on at all times, and bad cause the holes in the barrel blow up dirt in your eyes when shooting. That is the reason I dont have groups yet. Got the eotec on paper and stopped shooting cause the gasses were melting my front sight and guard protectors. After only like 5 shots. crazy.

Im thinking about contouring the barrel on my 10/22 the same so I can use teh suppressor on that as well...ha dam addiction...

Re: John's Guns Suppressors

After shooting it at the range this weekend and getting it sighted in, I stretched its legs out to 465 yards.

My 50 yard zero reuslted in a little less than 1" groups with the eotec dot and super cheap bulk ammo. I did not shoot paper at any other distance, as groups dont concern me. Minute of coyote does. I was able to consistantly hit the 465 10" plate holding over approx 4'

As for suppression, with ear muffs, you can barely hear the rifle fire. With no ear muffs, would compare to a 22 shooting super sonics.

I think I will shoot it in the next tactical match just to see how it does/get more comfortable with the ballistics of a 223 at range.

I have a couple boxes of 75 grain hornady ammo. Anyone know if the 1/9 twist will stabilize this bullet weight?

Re: John's Guns Suppressors

well, I never got a good zero with it off due to the holes drilled/ported in the barrel -> When shooting, gasses would blast out, kick up dust and hot gasses into my face, and started to melt my front sight. Due to the weight of the suppressor, I would imagine there to be a shift, but I absolutely dont care because this weapon will never be fired w/o the suppressor on.

Yes, I hate temptation.

So another question: I am obviously going to take off the suppressor to test to make sure the target holes are nice and round. It shouldnt matter how far away the target is to make sure the holes are round? So, shooting paper at 10yds should be fine to make sure the bullet is stabilized?
