JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

I finally bit the bullet and ordered a new JP rifle several weeks ago and I just recently took delivery. I have to say that it was a pleasure dealing with JP. The staff was knowledgeable, courteous and sure enough delivered the firearm in the time quoted (that’s a first for me).

Last weekend I loaded up some ammo for the sole purpose of taking it to the range to run some shells through it & I think I am simply going to stick with this load that I took to the range.

Special thanks to “BgBmBoo” for some words of wisdom and reassurance in spending the scratch for this rifle.

Kind of makes all those threads about waiting far longer than the promised delivery date seem silly doesn't it

You're going to love that gun. Just be careful even just one in your safe can pose a risk of procreation.

Awesome stick. Keep an eye on barrel crown carbon buildup. I got a ton from the JP brake like that. Groups opened up big time.

I agree with that statement “Kind of makes all those threads about waiting far longer than the promised delivery date seem silly doesn't it”…. And yes I see another rifle in the future from them.

Problemchild – thanks for the head’s-up on the crown carbon buildup.

Congrats on your JP CTR-02 purchase! They are outstanding rifles. Honestly I think you can easily tighten that group up a bit by testing some incremental powder charges. My JP15 and the other JP's I've helped work up loads for are bug hole tack drivers when you find a node. What was the load you were using?

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Looks like at CTR-02, but I don't see the gas block at the end of the handguard. My CTR-02s have a 12" long handguard, is yours longer than this?

PS I see that JP offer two types of handguards, with one larger in diameter than the other. Your rifle has the large diameter handguard that surrounds the gas block.

the new JP handguards are 15.5, it is something the 3 gun guys have been running for barricade engaugement

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Sorry for the late delay... I have been working to pay for my firearm habit. It is a CTR-02 w/ an 18" barrel & the 15" handguard to cover the gas block.

Bunsen - I agree with you. I know for a fact the group could tighten up without even changing the load. It was a cold day & I was shooting from a bench. So not only was a shivering a bit, but I am also not so great at shooting from a bench (I prefer prone). The load I am using is a 55 grain V-Max Hornady bullet being pushed by 25 grains of Varget in some Lakecity Brass.

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

I know it's not the first powder many shooters turn to but I've had excellent success with W748 in my JP's under both 55gr and 69gr bullets. Varget is great, but can bridge too easily in the narrow .223 case mouth. I also tend to reload for .223 in terms of hundred's or thousand's of rounds at a time (Dillon 550). If you ever do additional load development give it some consideration. Have you adjusted the gas block to minimize the recoil impulse yet? Mine shoots like a .22LR. Have a GREAT time with prarie dog season this year!

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Damn this thread! I had decided to wait on ordering a jp upper until after my bolt action build was done, now I got the bug agian. New I should not have opened it up! Congrats and that is an awesome looking rig!

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Bunsen... I have not messed with the gas block tube. Now that you bring it up, I will be sure to give that a try this weekend. And I am now looking at the dillon press pretty seriously. I am in the process of loading 2000 rounds and it is a very slow process on a single stage press.

FYI - in part the reason why I chose to use Varget is because I have so much of it.

Gilly - I am not sure where you live in Colorado; however if you want to go throw some lead, let me know

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

I'm fairly certain the CTR-02 comes standard with JP's low mass BC and buffer so you should be good to go. The way I tuned mine was to close it off completely (single shot mode) then gradually open it up until it would successfully feed the next round. Once there, open it another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to guarantee reliability. The como of the Brake and low mass operating system should yield a very small recoil impulse which allows extremely quick follow up shots.

If you do go the Dillon route I will warn you that Varget (and other extruded powders) in the Dillon powder metering system can be VERY frustrating. Give serious consideration to a ball powder. It measures that type very well. Best of luck.

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Congrats, I have the same rifle (5 years older) and it is awesome. As far as the carbon build-up on the crown I cut the top off a 4oz. solvent bottle and I dip the muzzle in it with some Butch's Bore Shine for 5 min. I have the bead blasted barrel though, I'm not sure if it woul discolor the polished barrel. It works great.

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Good reminder to get some new glass and take my CTR-02 out of the safe and shoot it! Will also have to try some of the v-max bullets. Thanks for posting

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Outdoorsman9... if you buy a JP you will not regret it. Not only are they very good on estimating their delivery time, but they are also great at building an incredibly accurate AR

This picture is when I first took it out to the range w/ The S&B scope... which I later replaced w/ the Vortex Razor

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Jabels - Ultimately it is hard to find a good scope mount for an S&B PMII that pushes the scope forward, like the mount does for my Razor.

I have to say that I do love my S&B's; however, I am shocked at how much I do like my Razor.

Re: JP rifle – future Prairie Dog slayer

Those are actually some of the first rounds out of the gun - the groups have since shrunk... and your point Grouse is well taken; in fact, I actually sold my bolt gun because the JP is so accuracte
