Just getting started!

Hello I'm just getting started in precision shooting I bought a remington 700 5r which I get to pick up next friday. This will be my first bolt action rifle, its in 308. I also picked up a swfa 10x scope While I save up for a nightforce. I'm going to get a ferrel one piece base and some burris xtr rings to mount the scope in, what do you guys think about that?
I'm also going to get the badger fte removable muzzle break and the surgeon bolt knob(not the o-ring one)I already have a harris 6-9 brm-s but would like your guys opinion on the other stuff beause I'm new to this world and dont know jack! oh and a timney trigger is also on the list for next month as well as a redding big boss reloading kit, Thanks!

Also what height xtr rings should I get for the 10x super sniper? I plan on getting tthe badger base and rings when I upgrade my optic to the nightforce

Don't waste your time on the brake for the .308. Just learn to shoot it. The brake will help mask problems in your form. Same with the bolt knob. Just save that cash for better glass.

Low ring are usually fine, but I am not 100% certain what the height is on the Burris rings. Lower is better. Too low is when the objective is actually touching the barrel.

I would suggest just getting a Seekins 20 MOA base and Seekins low rings. They are more expensive than your choice, but less than the Badger pieces. Seekins are top quality.

The Harris BRM-S will work just fine.

I HIGHLY suggest that you not spend money on a bunch of "upgrades" until you actually learn the rifle. You will find lots of guys who spend more money on parts for the rifle than they do on ammo and learning to shoot it.

I am currently running a 16x SS with an EGW 20moa base and TPS low rings. I love the rings and with my setup I have plenty of room from objective to barrel. You can see my scope/rings/base combo in my sig. I don't think you need to save up for much better glass. The Super Sniper I have I'm extremely pleased with. I prefer fixed power so you're not playing with 20 settings each time you get into shooting position. All you do is set your focus use your hold over and you're ready to fire.

As stated before the brake is nice to have but not required. And the bolt handle is only required if you're doing tactical matches where speed is required.

Instead of those two I'd suggest getting a reloading kit.

That total will be less than you were going to spend on your bolt handle and break together. And will help your accuracy more than any piece of gear on your rifle.

Alright JHF here's my 2 pennies worth for what it's worth. I have wasted lots and lots of money by not just saving and waiting to buy exactly what i wanted. i started with a 700 VS then moved on up to the 5R world. Thought i wanted a break because "it just looked cool as shit" right. Well I got a break installed and lost some shooting friends....DAMN THAT THING WAS LOUD!! and no one would lie next to me when shooting(just kiddin about the friends). Sooo I had a thread protector made and kept on shooting. My suggestion is don't do the break thing. If you can't handle .308 recoil....shoot .22's.
I did make one good move right off the bat though with the 5R, I did purchase the matched Farrell rings and base and they have followed me right on through to where I am today. I now have that set-up along with a NF 5.5-22X56 on a Whidden Gunworks Stiller based .308 and man do I love it! No where to go but down and have no intentions on doing such.
Guess what I'm saying is save save save. Buy what you want but set your goals high. If not you'll end up trying to get half your money back by selling later.
Get a decent bolt knob installed if you perfer but try to see some first on other rifles.I have a Callahan with knurled handle and it hurts my right index finger after long shooting strings, ie, 50-100 rds. But here again "It looks cool" but ain't worth shit. The knurl hits my knuckle in recoil. I too am looking for a different bolt knob but I'm going small.
Your bi-pod choice is good.
Next order of business....let's talk trigger. Not much wrong with Timney buuuut look at a Jewell. THEY ARE WORTH THE MONEY. Don't wish later and be stuck with a Timney trigger lying on the shelf while you shoot the Jewell. Jewell triggers are the way to go and very user adjustable and friendly. At least that's my opinion. Hope all agree.
The main thing I've noticed in shooting is to have fun but learn at the same time. The best thing you can do is make empty brass and keep on a sendin lead down range.Don't worry about lookin cool just worry about hits hits hits. That'll get you farther than "lookin cool" any day. I'll take stomping a buddies ass by out shooting him over being COOL and PRETTY.

One more thing.....Start reloading.
Try 155 Lapua Scenars in front of 46.2 grs of Varget for the 5R and see what she'll do. I think you'll be well sassyfied.

Thanks for all the responses! I already have a redding bigboss reloading kit heading my way I just need to start building my reloading bench now, a trip to homedepot for the supplies and another to bevmo for the 12 pack should make for an interesting weekend lol I also just found out its a 20x super sniper not a 10x as previously stated. Mid height rings should work out fine right?

Edit: to whoever said to get lapua 155gr sceners thats exactly what i bought last week lol I bought 100 and 100 lapua brass now I just need the vargent and some dies. I'm going to shoot about 100-150 black hills 168gr through the 5r firts though before I start load testing I believe is what its called.

20x is a bit much unless you aren't going to shoot anything under 100-200yds. It will definately get the job done. You just wont be able to shoot at anything short.

My rifle didn't like black hills, but it liked ferderal. Every barrel is completely different. Good luck but once you find the magic round you will be in heaven because every time you pull the trigger the bullet will go just where you want it (assuming you do your part).
