Picked up this Remington 7mm-08 Model 770 rifle over the weekend @ Gander Mountain for $289.99. Wanted to get another hunting rifle, since I've had my 30-30 since I was 16. The Model 770 comes in may options, and I could have gotten the .300 instead but was told I would blow off the shoulder of a white tale deer and destroy the meat, so I opted for this 7mm-08.

I Haven't fired it yet.

I wanted to ask the experts here if I made a good purchase?
What ballistics is recommend, 145gr bullet ok, or should I go heavier? Most of my shots are 150 yards or less.

Also are there any upgrades, such as bi-pods, camo stocks I could get?

Thanks

Joe

The 300 would work fine too, but you definitely do not need it for white tail deer. 7mm08 is a fine choice and I think a much better round for deer in most cases. Any of the hunting rounds should serve you well. Drop or wind will not be a big factor at those ranges, so IMHO it is going to be just whatever you prefer and the rifle will group well with.

I think the typical 140 grainers would be just fine. The typical core lokts would do the trick nicely.

"Ballistics" wise, make sure you can get out and shoot it with the ammunition you will be using. I would try to get it zeroed at about 100 yards. That would give you plenty of wiggle room in the ranges you mentioned.

I'll bet the rifle is good to go as is. Scope or irons?

The 7-08 is an awesome round, only limited by the ammo choices of the regular manufacters.
If you handload, the 130 grain speer spbt is absolute death to whitetails.
Any of the various 139 - 145 grain factory loads will work very well, the 145's will definitely whistle ight through them.
