My nine month old son has been sick this past week(it seemed to be a cold or just the usual teething stuff). But this morning he was really struggling to breathe and his hands and feet were starting to turn blue, so we called his doctor and off we went. Well needless to say he was admitted shortly after we arrived and found out he has RSV. The worse part of the whole thing is they only had a overflow room with just enough room for a lousy chair in it. So the fiance is taking the night shift with him and I will be heading there first thing in the morning. Anyways it has been a terrible day and I was just looking to vent a little.

Thanks
Paul

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

Well with any luck things will get better soon. Nothing makes a guy feel more helpless than watching his sick child struggle to breathe.

Best of luck

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

RSV is nothing to mess around with! You guys made the right choice and with a 9 month old the hospital is the best place to be. Very treatable and with proper monitoring easily taken care of. I know how stressful it is after being through it twice with my own kids. The common treatment is breathing treatments with Albuterol or similar and if bad enough steroids. The one thing you need to keep an eye on that is often overlooked even in the hospital is hydration. Keep an eye on the baby's soft spot and the first sign of it being depressed you need to notify the nursing staff. God luck and stay strong!

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

Yeah this is most certainly stressful, but unfortunately this is not his first trip to the hospital my little guy was born with esphogeal atresia(sp) its where the espohgus was in two seperate peices when he was born so he had to have surgery to correct that when he was two days old(thats a pretty tough start for a baby) but thankfully the surgery went well and the only side effect is the possibility of him having acid reflux for the rest of his life, but considering the other option thats not too bad. They do have him on steriods and have been giving him breathing treatments and when I left him he seemed to be doing better he even managed a smile for me(that made my day a hell of a lot better). They told us to be prepared for him to be there for the next 3 to 5 days depending on how he does with the treatments. Thank you all very much for you kind words and prayers they sure mean alot. Have a good night everybody.

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

The key is to watch for the stridorous breathing. First sign of that and you should be off to the ER. My wife is a NICU nurse and even though newborns don't get RSV (shouldn't) she's heard some true horror stories about it. Scary having a kid who is having a hard time breathing. I would freak out! RSV has got to suck but he'll be OK after the course of steroids. My little one got croup and had to do steroids via vaporizer, followed up with an steroid injection.

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

How's the little guy doing?
I had the croup twice between the ages of 4 and 5. Spent a few nights at the hospital in a oxygen tent. Mom use to take me out on the porch swing at night till I could breath better. Fell asleep many a night to the hum of a vaporizer.

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

Hello everybody

Just wanted to give you all an update on my son. He responded very well to the treatments and is doing well. I talked to the doctor when they were doing rounds today, and she was really impressed with how he is doing. They took him off oxygen and removed the IV. He is eating like normal and said that he should be able to come home sometime over the weekend as long as he continues to improve. I just want to thank you all for your kind words, and thinking of me and my family. I am very thankful and am impressed with the quality of people who are members of this site.

Thanks again

Paul

Psawmiller,

I know I'm getting old when my bones crack, my mile run times are slower, and I cry when I read these posts!!

I don't KNOW what you and your family are going through. But, I imagine my 10 or 7 Y.O. boy in that situation and I fall apart!

I send my most sincere(as much as a forum can be) wishes to you and your family during this time. I was very happy to read the update with better health! Keep us posted. Get home soon!!

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

Hello

I know its been a while since I have given an update with this post but figured now is as good of a time as any. My son has since been in the hospital twice since the first time he was admitted with RSV for the same thing. He is currently at home and doing pretty well still getting breathing treatments frequently along with a inhaled steriod for the next 30 days. Hopefully that helps the little guy kick this thing and he gets back to normal soon. I am very optimistic since everyday he seems to get a little better. Oh and thank you all for you kind words and wishes.

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

I can't even imagine what you are going through, one of my two little guys gets the sniffles and I get all paranoid. Seems like your boy has a lot of heart to battle this problem over and over. Best wishes to you and your family from my family.

Re: Just got home from the hospital.

The doctors tell us he is having a hard time because of his birth defect. He was born with esophogeal atresia(sp) his trachea is weaker than a normal infant from the site they did the surgery. This birth defect also comes with other problems like heart and lung defects, and it seems now that his lungs have not developed properly, but the good news is the doctors think that he should outgrow most of his issues. They say once the steriods help him get over this he should be fine, and once he is through is first couple years he should be all caught up. They fully expect him to have a bright and long future ahead of him so we are being very hopeful at this point. Thanks again for all your wishes.
