Just got my new leupold Mark 4 M5 LR/T 3.5X10 FFP TMR scope.

First Impressions:

The scope appears to be very well built. The new M5 turrets with 0.1 Milrad adjustments feels very positive with the turret clicks and are nice and audible. I have not used a NF or Hensoldt or S&B so i cant compare this scopes turrets feel compared to them but from my point of view there good to go.

The scope comes with its box of goodies inside with (2) very nice flip up scope covers.

The class quality looks very good to me and the images overall are nice and crisp. The TMR reticle so far looks to be in proper alignment (leupold reticles being crooked) from me manually holding the scope since im waiting on the vortex 30mm low rings to come this week. When i zoomed the power in and out the reticle image was very good. The TMR reticle on low power is kinda small but not too bad. Also figuring this is a 3.5X starting power then its to be expected.

The rest of the scope overall has good attention to detail and appears to be ready for some usage. I noticed something new, and that is on the bottom of the scope where the serial number is leupold added a barcode system on it.

Here are some pictures.

Re: Just in

I really like the new M5 knobs, have you found out how much total elevation travel you have? I have found that m5 turret models seem to have more elevation than the M1s. Does the bar-code look like what is being printed on Military Optics(New requirement for supply)?

Re: Just in

I have 2 of these in the 4.5-14 with the M5 & TMR. They are great scopes no doubt. You get to retain all the tac FFP mil/mil features, but in a light 22oz package. I got my first one back in October. It's been to Wyoming, Texas, Kansas, and all over Oklahoma hunting deer and coyotes. It's never let me down or given me issues. I've cranked the shit out of the turrets from 100yds to 800yds while hunting. It's never failed to return to dead on zero.

I do wish i would have got one in the 6.5-20 though instead of 2 of the 4.5-14's. One rifle I have is a longer range rig and I'd be nice to have the higher mag of 20X.

Re: Just in

Well I need to adjust the scope and parallax and all that fun stuff so the scope is sitting on the vortex rings until i get things set up to properly get the scope ready to go. Let me tell you, anyone looking to buy a seekins product....damn...these rings are extremely well made. Vortex rings are made by seekins. And the fit and finish is top of the line. I am gonna make a custom cheek piece and attach it to the stock and put it under the Tac Ops cheek pad i have so i get proper eye alignment. I also have a TIS contract sling attached to the rifle.

Standby for that.

I saw this video from the NSSF about scope alignment and so forth..very well made.

Re: Just in

Taking some 100 MPH duct tape and making a custom cheek riser piece and gonna put it under the cheek pad. This is just good FYI if you want to adjust cheek height. this is the field expedient version. If this works out then i wont have to get a new stock and or modify the stock in any way as to be permanent.

I know once the tape piece is under the cheek pad it wont move too much and i can secure it down and the tape will self adjust to be a comfortable fit. The 80 cent option to a cheek height issue.

Re: Just in

Well i made a custom cheek riser piece using a old pen with no cap and wrapping the 100 mph duct tape around it and putting it under the cheek pad and the alignment of my eye through the scope is dead on.

Have a technical question....no matter what i do the the circle of the scope as im looking at the tmr reticle is pretty defined with only a slight what seems a pinch fuzzy. I have moved the scope forward and backwards as much as i can and i think i have found the happy medium. I am laying in the prone doing this as its the primary shooting position i will be doing. Any suggestions? The scope is set at the proper eye relief and so forth but also im in a house like 15 feet from a wall and was looking at it through the scope but i dont think that would affect the slight fuzzy image of the circle of the scope as looking through it.

In the next day or so i will go outside and see if its a issue or not.

The distortion that you have found in kirks S&B picture appears to be spherical aberration. It happens because spherical lenses are much cheaper to produce than aspherical (parabolic) lenses. Spherical lenses do not actually focus all of the light coming into them at a single point and the further from the center of the lens the light passes through the further from where it is supposed to go it lands.

Many things can be done to minimize spherical aberration during optical design such as adding lenses to correct for it, simply using an aspherical lense to start with, or installing a baffle to limit the field of view so you won't see the distortion near the edges (the Japanese tend to do this a great deal which is why European optics tend to have a wider field of view.)

You may have noticed that you cannot do any of these things because they are all part of the optical design and cannot be performed by the user. Most scopes show some spherical aberration at high power. Look on the bright side, would you rather have no aberration but a small field of view or a little fuzziness near the edges. You have noticed S&B chose to go with the large field of view. To my mind that is the correct choice.

Re: Just in

I just looked through both the S&B 5-25s I have set out ready to go to the range and neither has that. Both are clear from edge to edge. I am going to look at them at the range but I don't remember seeing it before.

At low power and max power it seems to be the same.

From what i understand yes. Its the same 5R rifling and twist rate but aside from that the barrel contour is lighter than the M24's.

Re: Just in

In the end what should i do? Is it a big issue? When i go outside i may not notice it at all. But since i dont have a huge experience with scope i might just be worried for no reason.

Thank you for all the reply's.

Re: Just in

Well i went to go shooting today but my friend who was watching my rifle and ammo and was asleep so i couldnt get the gun and ammo today. DAMN. But also i have to get a new gun case since my rifle with its day optic is a little too big for the small hard plastic case i have already. So in a way this works ou....get a new gun case and wait for a weekend when friend is awake to give me my rifle and ammo.

I hope so to. I gotta pick up a new gun case and im going to make a tracking test target this week so once the optic is sighted in i can then test the tracking.

Re: Just in

Well i installed the timney straight trigger today and aside from the bolt release being a little annoying, the timney straight trigger is awesome. The trigger is crisp and precise. I had timney adjust the trigger to 2.5 pounds. The straight trigger has no problems in the trigger guard do to the trigger extending down. Also i was able to put my finger on the trigger at the same place with no problem.

I have not gone to the range yet but hopefully this weekend if all goes well.

Anyone considering a timney straight trigger......GO FOR IT and dont look back.

Will get pictures soon.

Re: Just in

I went with the timney becuase overall the timney seems to be a lot more forgiveable when dirt and so forth works its way into the trigger. I didnt like the bolt release and its spring becuase it was annoying to install since ive never done it before lol. But overall its was a fun experience. Trigger poundage is set at 2.5 pounds.
