Just purchased a McMillan a3-5.....Questions?

Guys,

I am in the process of assembling my first modern bolt gun and I have some questions regarding a stock I just purchased.

Currently I have a 700 AAC SD and I just ordered and received a McMillan A3-5 in GAP camo with sniper fill from Longrangehunting.com. I ordered their version that comes already inlited for a Surgeon bottom metal which is also on order.

Stock looks and feels great...question is, it does not appear to have pillars installed, I know the kit from Surgeon comes with these pillars.

Do I need to use them?

Since the stock was inlited for the Surgeon, with the pillars fit or will they need to be drilled and bedded?

Will I need a smith for this?

I would think it needs to be pillar and glass bedded.

I suggest bedding it anyway if yor on the fence. Its been proving time and time again how much bedding helps with accuracy, but consistency.

I guess it would depend on your smith and how he prefers to bed it.

A McMillan should always be bedded. The pillars will also have to be bedded. You can either do it yourself but I would recommend taking it to a great gunsmith because many will mill out parts of the stock before bedding them.

Not all gunsmiths know how to properly bed an action. Send it to a known quantity; someone who has proven experience in doing good bedding jobs.
