And I thought I would make a post about it!

As my first rifle is worth more than the blue book on my car I thought I should take some efforts to protect it and some other valuables I own. I live in a rental house but intent to instal it in of of the unlighted closets and upon moving I will just fill the holes in the floor of said closet. No one ever checks the closet floor during move in/move out inspections. Any thoughts or suggestions or good recipes for cheesecake are gladly welcomed!

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

Ya with that warranty and the research I have done I am not concerned at all about the electronic keypad. My favorite are the stories where the locksmith tells you he fixes electronic to mechanical locks at a rate of 3/1 and then in the same breath tells you his home safe has an electronic lock lol.

Congrats on your new safe. The closet should be a good place to put it,and bolting it down is a good idea.Don't forget to employ some kinda moisture control.

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

My wife has been on me to get a gun safe for a while and that seems like a great deal for a shipped safe. Other than the $200 rebate, how did you decide on that safe. If anyone else knows of any good deals, feel free to chime in.

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

You pick the biggest safe that makes sense with the thickest walls that you can afford. Costs for better safes go up almost exponentially. Google for Graffunder, for example.

Like the Army (and like with computers) - think of layered defense. A safe is just one layer. It can't be the only layer of your defense (as there is no un-crackable safe). Inconspicuous location, burglar alarm, monitoring, good relations with neighbors, no "telegraphing" how many great and expensive guns are kept in your house, etc.

In the end - just like with guns, any safe is better than no safe.

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

I've had my liberty for almost 10 years with electronic keypad and it's been fine. I must be one of the lucky few, but I love it!

I also have rental properties and need to remember to check the floors in the closet.

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

I am a locksmith and have worked on lots of safes and you hardly ever see a failure with a good mechanical lock, but electronic locks are much handier. there are also a lot of different electronic locks out there and some of them are real crap. one of the best safes you can get for your money is a Liberty. good fire protection is also very important. also the worst place you can place your safe is up stairs because if you have a fire heat rises up and it will toast every thing in there much quicker and if the fire weakens the floor enough and the safe falls through the impact will f every thing inside up really bad.

Re: Just purchased my first gun safe

I good safe sure gives you a nice warm feeling dont it?

For moisture control I have the plug in rods, but I also keep a can of Damp-Rid in both safes. I trust the Damp-Rid as much as anything. Never had an issue even when the safe was in the garage.

Wow that is a great price! Do you know what the difference is between their alphanumeric system? I've seen their EX20 model on sale before and almost picked it up.
