Just saying howdy from a n00b!

Just wanted to make a quick post and say howdy to everyone. Im a n00b, and fairly new to LR shooting. Ive owned handguns since I was a teen (Father taught me proper handling, and gave me my first handgun a .22LR when I was 13). Ive also usually had a shotgun or two, and an occasional mid caliber rifle.

But, recently I have found myself wanting to get into LR match shooting. I am on a budget, but I found what seemed like a nice rifle and caliber last week. I picked up a Savage .270 WSM which has the "heavy weight" barrel. Its got an el-cheapo Bushnell scope on it, but I plan on replacing it with something nicer within the next few months. I figured the price was so right on the rifle and scope, that if I found I didnt like LR shooting, or just plain sucked at it, I wouldnt be out much cash

Anyways, just wanted to say howdy, and that the forums looks like it has a metric crap ton of information! Im looking forward to reading up, and learning!

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

Im guessing some sort of Hazing ritual for the n00bs?

Also forgot to mention, that LR shooting in my area is only about 200 to 300 yards

There just isnt that many ranges around, and the longest I've seen is 300 yards at a Gun Club in the next town. I will mostly be spending my time at a local State Park range that is pretty nice, but only 100 yards. Its kind of hard to turn down $36 bucks for a annual Cherokee National Forest pass that can be used for the Ranges, boat ramps, and camp grounds.

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

Maser,

Although your definition of a mid caliber round is probably more accurate than mine on this forum, I was considering mid caliber to be from a .223 to a .30
I had almost bought a .223 and even looked at .308's pretty hard. But after seeing the ballistics on the .270WSM, I decided to go that route especially for the price I got on the rifle. I really dont plan on hunting with the rifle, just match shooting.

Thanks for the welcome!

Im located in the South-east corner of TN, in Polk County. Im about 30 minutes east of Chattanooga, and about 20 minutes East of Cleveland TN. I will mostly be shooting at Gee Creek Shooting range thats in the Cherokee National Forest, but wouldnt mind traveling to a longer range.

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

If you want to get serious about making small groups, get out to 300M and work to make small groups(under 1.5"). You may want to start in increments at 100M for 1/4", 200M for 1/2", 300M for 1.5", you know, serious 1/2 moa groups. If you or your rifle suck at this, you may want to trade to a 308, or a 6.5 Grendel. Either way, expect to reload your own to match specs because match ammo costs. Anything that you can find for under $20 would probably be considered blasting ammo.

Baby Calibers: .177, .17, .22, .223, basically anything starting with .22 is baby caliber

big boy calibers begin with .308, and that don't mean a 7.62x39 goes here because that's a woman's gun(Panty 6 has one so, stfu

)

Real calibers are the things like .338LM, .50BMG, or in other words, the ones most of us can't afford to shoot without being supplemented.

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

That WSM is going to have a fairly short barrel life so if you plan on doing a lot of shooting, a 308 would be better. If you can only go out to 300 yards, then a 223 bolt gun will do everything you need and cost a lot less to feed. If you cant shoot good groups at 300 yards with a 223, Long range isnt your forte.

A friend of mine lives in Chat, and he took me to the range in the national park. Its a pretty nice place!

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

Victor lives a couple hours north of you and knows where all the best ranges are. The beauty of your Savage is that you'll be able to swap out that barrel and bolt head to more typically encountered long range match round like the .308, 6 or 6.5 MM rounds etc.

Welcome.

I'm 20 years old and I been seeing it spelled that way since I got my own internet connection when I was 12. It's NOT a new thing.

Re: Just saying howdy from a n00b!

Heh. I think n00b was the original spelling. I am a PC tech by career and just about all the tech forums I peruse, n00b is standard lingo. Another good variant is "newb".

Switchblade,
I would love to work 300m, but I just dont think there is a range in my area that has that kind of distance.

queequeg,
I noticed that Victor isnt that far at all from me. His profile states hes in Knoxville, which is about 45 min north of me. Im actually in K-Town quite a bit drinking in Old City

SuperBee 950,
Your friend probably took you to the same range I will be visiting quite a bit. Was it up on a gravel road that ran next to a river? Its named Gee Creek Shooting Range, and its a really nice range.

Never said it was new. The site I'm referring to has been doing it that way since before you got that internet connection way back when, er, eight years ago.

I see noob, and newb all the time. I don't see it spelled using '00' very often.

My mother's family is from Polk County. She was raised in the "Greasy Creek" community outside of Reliance. Closer yet would be the Fairview Baptist Church area.

If you want to make the trip to Oak Ridge, I can take you over and show you around the Oak Ridge Sportsman's Association. It is considered my many to be the premier CIVILIAN high power & long range shooting range east of the Mississippi River. But then, I'm kind of prejudiced in that way.

I used to have a friend that shot at the Cleveland Rifle Club. Have you checked that out? I was never there. But in the 1970s they were supossed to have a nice club. You might have to contact local law enforcement or shooting store to find out where the place is. The gun store in Benton may know where it's located.

Good luck.
