Hello there. I recently bought a new K&M flash hole uniformer for my .223: http://www.precisionreloading.com/mm5/me...y_Code=FLASH_KM Now I am very new to this whole reloading business so sorry for the dumb question but am I not supposed to full length size my brass before I use uniform my flash holes? I would deprime them and full length size and try to use my flash hole uniformer and I could not fit the tool through the neck mouth. Did I buy the wrong size tool for my .223? Once again, im sorry for this dumb question.

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

Nope! thats the beauty of the K&M flash hole tool, your brass can be sizen, unsized, trimmed or untrimmed and it will still deburr the flash hole the same way. It doesnt index off of the case neck for you to worry about sizing, it indexes off of the web of the case. Oh and you only need to do this once, just FYI.

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

Okay thanks. When I full length size mine though (to deprime them) the tool does NOT fit in the case mouth. So my question is how can I deprime the case without messing with the case mouth? Do I need to buy a separate tool for that?

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

It sounds as if the sizer is reducing the case a little too much. My tool measures .221". You can use a decapper die. The Lee is cheap, but works well enough.

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

Oh ok, I see, I am trying to size my case to saami spec. (pushing the datum line to mil surplus ammo) i am shooting out of a semi auto. Ok I guess this raises another question then, should I just "bump" the shoulder back .003" instead of trying to make it saami spec? To make it saami spec, I was bumping it back about .006"

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

Eddie, I have now made my full length sizing die to bump the shoulders back .002" So now it reads 1.457" when I use the headspace guage from Hornady. The problem is still reoccurring and my flash hole uniformer still is not fitting inside the case mouth. These are redding dies, the cheaper kind though ($37 for full length and bullet seater). i had a pair of hornady dies that I used before my reddings before my hornadys broke. So I have a couple cases of full lengthed from the hornady die and it measures 1.457" also and it is able to use the K&M flash hole uniformer no problem. Is it something I am perhaps doing wrong?

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

Hi, let's get something straight first off...is this a 'flash hole' deburrer or a flash hole uniformer? I've seen the Sinclair flash hole uniformers and they enter the hole from the primer end, whereas the flash hole deburrer goes into the case mouth, to get the burrs off.

With 223, the rods on these tools might be a bit thick and not enter a sized case. You can chuck the rod into a drill and lay it on a sharpening stone, to reduce the diameter.

I have a couple of Lyman flash hole deburrers which will bind up on sized 223 cases. I honed one down and now it's as slick as snot. For all carts above 223, it's obviously not a problem.

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

A flash hole deburring tool is often called a flash hole uniformer, they are one in the same. The one that goes in from the primer side is not a flash hole deburring tool or uniformer, its a primer pocket uniformer.

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

I am for certain its a flash hole uniformer because thats what its labeled on my link in the first post. I dont really want to shave off the diameter of the stopper because I dont want to weaken the strength of it. I am only willing to as a last resort. Does anyone have any other ideas in mind? Wouldn't this smaller diameter of the case mouth affect the amount of tension on the bullet?

Re: K&M Flash Hole Uniformer Question

I think I found out why this isnt working the way it should. I am missing the size button which expands the mouth of the case. I am going to buy a new Redding decapping rod assembly. Thanks for the help you guys!

Respectfully, they're not.

Sinclair markets a flash hole reamer (uniformer) which opens the flash holes up to .081", from .080" for both small primer and large primer cases. It's got a colar on it that in essence, slips into the primer pocket and guides the cutter into the flash hole to cut away metal to get to the .081" diameter hole. Then, we have primer pocket uniformers, which obviously enter from the primer pocket.

This is what I was wondering about.

Sinclair sells them for $37.50 and the guide is double ended for both pockets.

Cheers, Chris
