So why is it so important to keep cleaning solvent out of the action of your weapon? I am in a discussion with a relative on this and I figure have some experts chime in. Thanks!

PS- Not sure if this is the correct section for this question but I thought I would start with it here and figure someone can move it if I am wrong.

Re: Keeping solvent out of the action question

If you have a wooden stock, the solvent will collect there and soften the area around the trigger group and ruin the structure.

Re: Keeping solvent out of the action question

Not quite sure exactly where in the "Action" you're referring but I can tell you getting solvents or oils in the chamber can cause excessive pressure against your bolt-face because the shell will slip backward in the chamber when the round goes off if it's oily or wet in there. Normally the brass will expand and grab the chamber when the round goes off. It lets go when the pressure is reduced by the round exiting. Bad things can happen!

Re: Keeping solvent out of the action question

I am sorry for the poor wording. I am refering to the chamber on back. OSOK thanks for pointing that out.

I appreciate the input these are all things ( less the tampon idea) that I have been saying as reasons to keep solvent out but I am sure there are more that I am not aware of yet so please keep the info coming.

Re: Keeping solvent out of the action question

Some solvents can soften the bedding in the stock. That is the main reason to keep the muzzle tilted down and use a bore guide.

If your rifle is glass bedded and you get solvent between the bedding and receiver, pull the action and clean it out. Don't let it sit.
