What this really is, is a case of Dereliction of Duty, on the part of our congress-critters.
It is their constitutional duty to put forth a working budget, and they will not.
The low level govt employees should not be the ones to feel the pain.
Our dear Reps and Senators should each be fined $50,000 per day, for dereliction of duty, for each day the govt is un-funded.
They would have it sorted out right quick.

Jail time is better. Those fines will come out of our pocket. They are the highest paid welfare recipients.

Employees that is doing something that is not a delegated power by the states and the people to the Federal government getting paid with money extorted under penalty of death by our government in an unconstitutional act.

Wondering how to apply for my self employed government shut down back pay check. Maybe I can with hold it from my income taxes. I'll pay zero, we'll call it even?
I think we could de-fund and disband the whole DOJ and be safer and better off.
Except here shortly, within the next month or less, Border Patrol Agents and Customs and Border Protection Officers will have to stop going to work so they can either work or find another job to pay bills until the government re-opens.
So, the border will become exponentially less secure in the coming weeks. Ironically, the border that is the center of the shutdown.
I’m all for border security and such, but you’re going to have to come up with paychecks pretty soon.

We don’t need border patrol, all we need are A10’s doing strafing runs. When they run out of ammo, they can drop fliers with “don’t worry, jerry is bringing more ammo to a fence near you “.

Well IF they leave their jobs to find other jobs then they damn sure should not be able to walk back onto the job once the Government re-opens.
Each and every .gov employee initialed and signed their employment documents stating whether they are considered essential or non-essential in times just as these.
They also initialed and signed stating they acknowledge that in times as these that they would not be paid as scheduled but would receive full back pay.
If any of them leave for another job then that is considered resignation so hope the new job is a permanent one because you do not get to reap the benefits of .gov job only when it benefits you.

Also, the laws that were made were intended for gov employees to not be able to strike to force the gov’s hand. They were not intended for the gov to use it’s workforce as a bargaining chip. This was unheard of at the time.
If “reaping the benefits” of a gov job is getting a pay check for work performed........well, guess I expect to “reap the benefits.”
One or two checks is whatever, comes with the territory.
4, 5, 6.......10 checks, you get into the “gotta do what I have to” to keep paying bills.
If we would do like we did with coyotes in Texas we wouldn't need as much border security.
When you drop one hang it on the fence to rot, makes a pretty good detergent.
Or just fix our fucked up immigration system and do a country wide roundup of illegals and a mass deportation.

Its called savings....The Government left it up to each individual to save for this exact situation, not only that....Federal HR departments have departments within it to help with finances and savings.
Each .gov employee that does not show up to work (If they were hired on and signed off as being essential) should be terminated for abandonment of post.
Each .gov employee that finds another job should do so knowing they just voluntarily resigned from their .gov post.
In short..my proposal to pay your individual bills...you are accountable for your own savings....because the Government has left that up to you; if they attempted to control that it would be considered communism.

None of this was in any documents you signed on for. Again, those laws were not passed in the event of gov’t lapses in funding. They were for essential employees in times of crisis, such as hurricane relief when we were in Houston for weeks at a time.
And yes it is “they,” as I’m single with no kids. Doesn’t affect me too much.

Agreed, even if they reopen the government today and make some common sense immigration laws we still are left with a dysfunctional overly bloated and wasteful system run by puppets and crooks.
A large number of the TSA clowns I have had the pleasure of enduring are fucking numpties barely qualified to be flipping burgers.

A “shutdown” is not an official gov’t term. Lapse in funding is.
Also, excepted personnel is the word you’re looking for.

Many government employees are filing for and receiving unemployment. And they will receive full back pay. As a former airline employee who was subject to the railway labor act and the corrupt politicians on the national labor relations board (appointed by Presidents) I have no sympathy for federal employees in this situation. They should tell Pelosi and Chuck to negotiate and settle with Trump

For someone that has been a .gov employee for years they should have taken the TSP briefings a little more serious huh?
My job is not to handle other peoples finances!! They are free to find another job, just as I am.

Also, since you’re so up to date on the government paperwork, you obviously have read OPM’s guidance for the law that was signed by President Trump last week.
In which it states if it is an approved absence, even excepted employees may choose not to use their leave, but may opt to be considered on furlough status and receive pay without using their leave.
Absences are already approved for financial hardships.
So........the .gov employees are well within the paperwork they signed to take approved absences and either use leave or furlough and return to their job.

You are not allowed to file for unemployment if you are working but not currently paid.
Only employees who are told to stay home are eligible.
This will kill any arguement you have. When you signed your paperwork you agreed to laws governing your employment.

Your argument was that .gov employees should be terminated based on their agreement with the gov’t. Which is fairly true, depending on their individual paperwork.
The gov’t has passed a law that enables employees to not come to work for any approved reason. Financial hardships are already approved. Outside employment is already approved as long as the correct form is filled out.
So, where is the basis for termination you spoke of?
Except the laws they agreed upon when signing their paperwork allow them to do exactly what you said they couldn’t do........not come to work due to financial hardship, work another job, and then return to work once funding is restored.
You made an ill informed statement and have been shown how gov’t employees are well within their employment agreements not to show up and still return to work.
