Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

I have sold a boat load of these units to guys here on the Hide!! I havent heard any complaints up to this point.

If you decide you need one we can get you taken care of!

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

I have had mine for a little over a month. Prior to obtaining the Kestrel, I used pre-printed data a cheap wind meter and plenty of dead-reckoning...

It appears to be Atrag MX.

I like the gun library feature. Multiple guns and the option to turn them on or off. IE; I can scroll through guns after target data is entered and automatically get a firing solution or I can opt to have only the gun I am using displayed.

Data is easy to enter or capture.

Multiple targets can be updated with environmental data at the same time.

I have old eyes and wear reading glasses for everything, no different for the Kestrel. Rough measurement of the font would put the firing solution at about a 16pt and data entry around 12pt. I know that young eyes would have no issue with the size.

Here is the User Manaul in PDF format .

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

Wow: I read through the pdf file for the Horus Atrag. I currently use my iphone with the Ballistic tactical field edition. I estimate my wind direction and velocity and enter it into my program and then use a stored factory ballistic table such as the Black Hills 275 grain 308 or I can create my own BC coef and velocity and bullet weight. Anyway, I then can choose how I want my ballistic table to display such as with MOA adustments and inches or Mil adjustments and inches.
Can you get your final ballistic tables with the Ketrel in both MOA and MIl's and inch drop?
Thanks
Gary

Yes, USMC mils, MOA and SMOA(inches), you can toggle units easily in many of the menus.

You can swap from yds to mtrs as well.

Lead, and Max Ordinate are also on the ballistics screen in a range card format

Sorry, may I ask the stupid question for my clarification? I interpret the Kestrel w/ Horus device to essentially replace a Kestrel 4500 AND Ballistic program PDA, and puts them together in one package. Am I correct?

If so, then at $600-ish, that seems like a pretty fair price, and one less thing to carry around.

Sorry, found the answer by total chance.

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

I was doing some mid range shooting this morning and had a target entered into the Kestrel.

We sighted in my buddy's rifle, chrono'ed 15, I set up his gun in the Kestrel. Same target as above for my rifle so I highlighted his gun, dialed the dope and he was whacking the 705yd gong from the first hit.

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

I've read the manual and the product looks pretty intriguing. The combination makes sense for the two functions but I really want to get my hands on one to see how it operates in the field.

Right now the bluetooth from the Kestrel to the Android phone isn't perfectly reliable but when it works, it does do a good job.

Anybody post a YouTube video of the operation of this?

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

G1 only.

This would go under the Cons list for me;

It does allow you to enter multiple BC's. The down side is that the additional BC's have to be tied to distance not velocity.

Example: .308 175smk

.505 above 2800fps .496 above 1800fps .485 below 1800fps

You would have to figure the range at which you wanted to enter the additional BC's as opposed to just using the above numbers.

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

Frankly, without G7 this is a total non-starter for me for long range shooting. G1 at distance additionally is a poor selection on Kestrel's/Horus's part as velocities obviously change with different atmospherics (high DA, further distance traveled). If they absolutely wanted to stick with G1, they should have at least allowed velocity entries to allow more accurate sampling along the curve with atmospherics accounted for.

While G1 at distances can work, it allows for too much error within the long-range discipline. BCs are unfortunately curvi-linear and as calculus would suggest, we would like a derivative reference model that closely tracks the actual curve/line.

I hope there is an upgrade that includes G7 at some point. So much possibility in an integrated device but this element was too basic a thing to miss on rev 1.

From an intellectual perspective, I would tend to agree that G7 is better. From a practical perspective, if I compare ballistic outputs from my 5.11 HRT watch (Horus ballistic calculator enabled in the watch) with those from a chart generated using the G7 BC (JBM ballistics), the variances are nominal.

If my job / life requires that I consistently put the first round precisely on target at obscene distances and with highly variable conditions, it may be worth going the extreme route and utilizing a calculator that accounts for every possible variable.

My gut tells me, even if you do that, variables such as variances in the BC across bullets, muzzle velocity variances, and other factors will contribute more to unpredictability than minor difference in calculations used.

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

Hi All,

This is Ben from NK where I work in technical support and worked pretty diligently to understand most of the ins and outs of the Kestrel with Horus ATrag.

Regarding the BC, please refer to the Horus blog (http://horusvision.wordpress.com/2010/09/page/2/) second post on the page regarding the BC Horus uses. For more information regarding specific differences I'm afraid you'll have to contact Horus.

Additionally, I noticed many people have questions about general operation - we are currently working on several things that will answer those questions. However, some quick things can be found on YouTube where I have posted a "Quick Key" video and a "Gun Configuration" video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-03qvU9SHFk, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpMgQfGqMOM&feature=related, respectively). For information on the key presses, be sure to click on the Closed Captioning button in the bottom right of the video window.

Very soon I will be posting a general features video (hopefully within the next few days), so remember to revisit KestrelTV's videos and keep a lookout for that.

Finally, a copy of the instructions can be found here: http://www.nkhome.com/pdfs/kestrel-instructions/Kestrel-horus-Instructions_v1.0.pdf. I should note that after SHOT show this past January, I realized it would be most helpful to start at the bottom right of Page 19 (Where the Quick Keys are explained), then read through the end of the manual for a better understanding of the layout of the menus. After that point, starting at the beginning of the manual would be helpful. One quick disclaimer is that the Kestrel absolutely does work in Mils, TMOA, SMOA; I made a misprint in that chart in the back. We will be updating this manual at some point hopefully soon, so please feel free to check back.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help!

-Ben

PS. I just ran this past Monica (one of our famous Kestrel Girls) and she asked that I also link to the general Horus FAQ on our page: http://nkhome.com/news/2011/02/kestrel-horus-atrag-ballistics-faq/.

Re: Kestrel with Horus Atrag

Agustus shoots with it in his various ELR rigs, and says it does a very good job for him. I've looked at it after talking with Agustus, but then backed away based on the price and what I thought was a pretty poorly written manual.

How often do you guys intend to update the projectiles included in the system? It seems there are new bullets being released yearly these days.
