First of all I would like to thank everyone at Kestrel for the kindness they have shown me and for what they did for me about my Kestrel 4000 that I received as a prize for finishing first on an event at the 2011 Gastonia sniper competition.
I was told by Kestrel when I shipped it to them for repair that the unit was a 2002 model and it was out of warranty.
(So basically I got a unit that was probably used and that was 9 years old and that it would end up costing me $203 for another unit. (The processor was shot) No pun intended!
To make a long story short I received a package through UPS from Kestrel after about 2 weeks and I immediately assumed that it was my broken unit that they had sent me back after I had waited more than 2 weeks without recontacting them.
However when I opened that box I found that they had sent me what appears to be a new Kestrel 4000 with all the paperwork and had not charged me one dime.
Even the shipping was free!
I can tell you that there are few companies that would do this and Kestrel has just earned a loyal customer for life.
I recommend them above anyone else.
It does not get any better.

Re: Kestrels customer service

Man, you lucked out. I recently sent them an out of warranty 4000 for repair. They diagnosed the problem as a bad elastomer (whatever that is). It cost me $203 for a replacement. I had just bought this unit used here on the Hide a month earlier. So my Kestrel 4000 cost me exactly $403 + shipping.

Re: Kestrels customer service

I'm having a problem getting the compass to calibrate. I've tried EVERYTHING the book says, stood out in a field , batteries rotated, spacer in, turbine out new batteries , old batteries, open field , ....the list goes on. I did a hard reboot, by opening the battery door and holding the power button down for 30 seconds and tried it again. Same message all the time. WARNING BATTERIES MAGNETIZED! please refer to book. Which tells you to rotate the batteries and try again. I've tried the cal about 100 times by now. No luck.

Anyone have similar issue?

Tech was no luck either, the hard boot was their idea.

Thanks

Re: Kestrels customer service

how fast are you turning... do you have any metal obstacles (watch...etc) around you. I know that when I did it I had some chimes and they interfered.

same problem. Will let you know if the battery flip works.

Maybe try a different brand of batteries...

Re: Kestrels customer service

Maybe the unit was new old stock from 2002 and was defective from the start and was just not sold.
I don't know but I really was not expecting them to do what they did.

Re: Kestrels customer service

Interesting, I recently upgraded to the 4500 model with BT and it came with a plastic shim/seperator that fits between the batteries to prevent the polarity effects of the batteries on the unit. Sounded like a fix for the proplem you describe?

Re: Kestrels customer service

I have the plastic spacer in and have tried it all. In a field with no belt, watch, or anything, also tried many different pairs of batteries, flipped, rotated....everything. No luck. Batteries magnetized. The rotations are perfect timed 10 seconds, I tried it all. The unit counts the rotations just fine,

Don't know the answer

Re: Kestrels customer service

To the OP: great service. I wish they straightened out the guys at Horus, Horus customer service is just horrible, they don't give a damn about us. Plus the Horus manual is a sad joke. With a 600 dollar unit I would expect something better.

Re: Kestrels customer service

Ben from Tech support just called me and they are shipping me out a brand new one, and including a postage paid return label for the old one that wont calibrate.

These guys stand behind their product.

I appreciate that.
