What is a good way to determine wind speed and direction with the Kistrel 4000 model? I don't have one right now (enroute) but if you have a wind coming from the southwest and you set it up facing the device due west can you use this wind speed to calculate the wind speed for input as coming from 9:00 or 270 degrees? Or does it even work like that? Example pointing the device due west shows average speed as 10 mph but the wind is actually from the southwest averaging 15 mph. Input 10 mph from the west (9:00). Hope that make sense. Thanks.

Re: Kistrel 4000 wind speed and direction

Get a 4500, then you take a bearing ito the wind, and a bearing downrange and it calculates the MPH that will be actually affecting the bullet.

Otherwise, face it into the wind and refer to degrees off downrange or clock value from target, apply whatever formula you use for wind
.

Culpeper, that could work but wind gusts so much and is variable all the way to the target. I just take several readings and then hold for the wind I feel right before I send it.

Re: Kistrel 4000 wind speed and direction

Now that I've had some time to play with it and it has been 15-25 mph the last couple of days I can see that the way I describe is not ideal. Better to point into the wind and take the average speed for starters and go from there based on the conditions downrange. I got it for the whole station pressure density altitude thing. But the wind speed average is nice feature.

I'm just curious if the 4500 is really that reliable as far as wind direction accuracy for shooting.
