Gunsmithing KMW LoggerHead Adjustable Cheekpiece

Re: KMW LoggerHead Adjustable Cheekpiece

Thanks for asking but NO x 2.

First off, the HTG stock is a very nice stock. Cutting the comb away from it or any other synthetic stock that counts on the shell of the stock for strength and integrity is a bad move. Would void any factory warranty and surely weaken the stock in a sensitive area.

Secondly, the HTG sports a fairly slim comb through the Y-axis (width). The upper assembly of the KMW hardware requires a rectangular pocket that is 0.500" deep and 1.1" wide. The HTG comb is too small to receive this mod.

**NOTE: McMillan also makes an Adjustable HTG with correctly molded 2 piece Stock/Cheek Piece, however it is still too narrow to receive my hardware. I may release a slimmed down upper assembly without any lateral adjustment in the future that would work.

Thanks again for considering this hardware. I wish I had better news for your intended project.

No wind,
Terry

Terry, Could you please confirm the Loggerhead works in the McMillan A-5?

Thanks, RT

Re: KMW LoggerHead Adjustable Cheekpiece

Terry,

Is it correct that for it to go into a McMillan A-3/4/5 that you must have the adjustable cheekpiece that does NOT have the thumbwheel?

The Karsten cheek piece, while probably not of the same caliber of KMW's offerings, is certainly a viable option. Last one I bought was under $70 and took ten minutes to install.

<span style="font-style: italic">RT</span>,

The <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">KMW Loggerhead</span></span> works in the McMillan A5. (Actually, TC says that the Loggerhead will work in the A3, <span style="text-decoration: line-through">A4</span>, and A5). <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">JW Precision</span></span> stocks A5s' with the KMW Loggerhead hardware in them, so unless you need a special configuration John Wall (JW Precision owner) may have what you need in stock. No waiting!

<span style="font-style: italic">Falar</span>,

<span style="font-weight: bold">You must order a McMillan A3/<span style="text-decoration: line-through">4</span>/5 as an adjustable stock</span> <span style="font-style: italic">so that the cheekpiece is molded in two (2) pieces, <span style="font-weight: bold">BUT WITHOUT HARDWARE</span>.</span>

A long time ago Terry Cross posted specific directions to this effect, but that thread may have been archived by now. If you do a search for Terry's posts and serach through all of them you may find it (if it hasn't been deleted from the server yet).

Re: KMW LoggerHead Adjustable Cheekpiece

Thanks Keith.

I am planning on contacting JW Precision to order an A-5. If it wasn't for their site, I wouldn't have known about the Loggerhead. I think it looks like a great option to smooth up the side of the stock.

You're welcome RT. I think its' really cool to be able to get a McMillan stock without the wait - especially without the PITA and downtime of having to order the stock, then send the stock out to have the KMW Loggerehead installed, then sent back to you. And at a $50.00 discount off of McMillan's price. Pretty hard to beat if you ask me.

Not only smooth, it is <span style="font-weight: bold">the</span> most rock solid adjustment system I've found.

Now I have a question, since the thread's answered the others-

Can the KMW be retrofit into stocks with older McM adjustables? I traded my A5's for A3's, and unfortunately my KMW loggerhead on one went with it. One of my A3's is the two screw adj and one is the two screw/thumbwheel.

Can but not recommended. Here's the deal:

Each type of hardware has specific inletting on the interior along with a myriad (I think that's a word) of cuts into the GelCoat shell of the stock that are again, specific to that type of hardware. One of the things I designed into the KMW hardware was minimal exterior cuts into the stock to minimize debris entry. Another was to have little or no knobs and fasteners hanging out to catch on everything.

Basically a re-fit would involve carefully cutting out the existing hardware with a mill and refilling the huge voids and holes where the original hardware resided. All holes and cuts in the surface of the stock would need to be filled and patched also. Only then could you proceed to cut a totally new inlet for the bottom assembly and top assembly.

This easily doubles or triples the cost of the hardware upgrade and then still have tell-tale signs of the old hardware unless lots of care is taken with a GelCoat patch kit.

Most people opt to cycle in a new replacement stock and then put the original stock on the market to help recoup most of the cost.

Thanks for the positive feedback buddy.
Be safe and best New Years wishes.

Re: KMW LoggerHead Adjustable Cheekpiece

Per my post above, it is not recommended that it be used to replace any existing hardware.

Now I am saying this from experience and not because I stand to gain by you buying a totally new stock. In fact, the complete hardware set is available uninstalled for anyone wanting a challenge.

NOTE: The hardware has a lifetime warranty as long as it is not altered or installed ass-backwards.

Also, please note that some earlier posts included the A4 as a candidate. This is not true. To my knowledge, the McMillan has never produced a 2 piece "adjustable A4" mold. The only way you can get any CP adjustment in an A4 is with the old style saddle setup.

Terry,

I edited my post to eliminate the A4 as a "candidate" for Loggerhead installation. I apologize for my transgression, sir.
