Know Thy Enemy

What better way to the learn the capability of an enemy aircraft than to fly it.

This assumes that your enemy can actually get their own aircraft to fly with any better reliability than you can.
Soviet fighters always had amazing specifications... when they were sitting out on the runway... But you get them in the air and forget to bring the hammer to beat things with and then it doesn't always work as hoped.

Soviet fighters flown by third world surrogates did not rack up a great score against American pilots in American fighters. Likely they would have fared a bit better with Russian pilots defending Russia.

A little bit better but while the Ruskies have had and do have some good pilots they never have had the numbers equal to the US. They'd certainly score victories but would be more on the receiving end, been that way through WWII, Korea and Nam. Their aircraft designs have been excellent but the build quality not so much.
