I took my dog out to where I shoot on public forest land. He’s still a young pup and we just got him a few weeks ago, so I kept the leash on.

I let him wander around while I setup my targets in an area that I could see him and close by. Brought him back to the truck and tied him off there as I unpacked my rifle.

He sits, starts making this huffing sound, then he does it more frequently on all 4’s, points towards the tree line, and then he starts barking. I waited by him to see if it was just a small animal. He wouldn’t stop barking, it’s like whatever was there was looking right at us.

He has seen deer and doesn’t do that. He points but not barking or huffing. He is friendly with other dogs and people as well. I was leaning towards a mountain lion. I kept my SBR out as I put him back in the truck to leave, he didn’t want to go back in the truck which was also unusual as he just jumps right in.

I had to grab his harness and put him in there. The tree line was too thick, so I couldn’t see what he was alerting on.

Thoughts? I am leaning towards a mountain lion. I took a video of him alerting, but I can’t post it here.

It would be really hard to decipher what he was standing his ground over. We’ve raised quite a few terriers, they are a great group of pups. Most will bounce around on the end of a leash if it something they want to hunt or something they think they can go kill. If they get to barking and huffing it’s generally something they feel threatened by. We had a JAG terrier, she was flat nuts. She would try and kill anything she could get a hold of that would try and fight back.

I actually considered it could be a homeless person, but it’s a 20min drive into the forest from the public road. No other vehicles around. Kinda far for someone to walk with few resources.

Did you still get service on your cell phone out there ? . Probably not homeless . If it like here in Oregon, the homeless stop camping where the Cell service ends .

I had this big ol' Airedale once and I was hunting. He was off leash and just took off like his ass was on fire. 3 minutes later here comes a black bear running for all he's worth with Airedale not far behind. If it weren't so funny I would have scolded him bigly...

Terriers are a different breed for certain. Most, regardless of size, can be fearless.

Ever watch the video of a really pissed off Yorkie vs mini schnauzer? Entertainment for sure, but shows determination of the specie.

Dogs can trigger on left over scent also . If the wind was right or it sniffed the ground right on the scent.
There could have been something or someone there or it could have been there a short while before you got there or left when you first arrived but the scent lingers . Dogs also see movement well . One dog I had could see game way further away than I could I would have to get the field glasses out to find what was triggering the dog . If it's a cross breed it could be sight and scent prone or one or the other . Even sight hounds still smell fairly well they just don't have the slobbery jowls to activate scent on the ground like say a blood hound does . A Wheaten Terrier looks nothing like a Whippet . They are related to the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier . If it looks like a whippet then it could be a cross breed .

My parents have 2 Airedale’s. Holy shit are those some crazy ass dogs. These 2 are assholes, they will gang up on you and knock you down.
