Well I tried to search the answer and figured it would just be easier to ask. The Krieger contour #17 heavy varmint how many thou taper is there from "C", the end of the barrel If it were to be cut down to 20 inches from 29? At 29 inches it is .900 What would it be at 20? Or will it still be .900 at 20 inches? I am deciding between the MTU and the contour 17 for a future build.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Krieger contour question

I don't see any Krieger contours listed as .990 at C.

I assume you mean .900. Either way, error on the lighter side, MTU is a pig and part of the reason for going 20" is to have a handy rig. I would actually suggest you think more along the lines of light varmint #18 which is still heavier than a Rem Varmint.

Re: Krieger contour question

Yes Sorry Typo I meant .900 I fixed the original post

If that's the case then the #18 light varmint contour might be the right option. Since C = .875 at 28 inches then at 20 inches it should end up heavier then .875.

Re: Krieger contour question

At 20" a #18 will be around .97, but you reduce your breech diameter to 1.2 with that profile. A remington Varmint contour is about .87 @ 20".

It boils down to what you want for finished muzzle dia, breech dia, and breech length; whether you want a straight taper or Remington style contour.

Krieger will cut your defined profile, as well

Re: Krieger contour question

Well thanks for the help. I was also told with a straight taper contours can have their 'taper per inch' calculated by subtracting the breech length from the finish length. Then dividing in the difference between the breech diameter and the muzzle diameter. The #9 heavy contour might fit the bill.

Re: Krieger contour question

Ok. What would the muzzle diameter for this one be at a finished length of 22"?

You'll grow in diameter approx .0125" per inch. The new muzzle diameter will be approx .975" at 22"

The #17 is .900" @ 28" The taper per inch increase would be .0125" per inch as you shortened the barrel. You'll be approx 1.00" in diameter at the new muzzle at 20"

Re: Krieger contour question

All you need to do is call Kreiger and have them contour a barrel that finishes at whatever length you want. If you want an 17 contour to finish at .900" at 22", they will make you just that.

They just made me an MTU contour with an 18.5" finish length (more drastic taper than a 26" finish)

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my inquiry, Sir.

Thank you.

Thanks for the heads up. I was looking to buy the aforementioned barrel since it is ready to ship. Waiting months for a custom barrel stresses me too much.
