I'm thinking of doing a paint job on the 17. Not sure what yet. I am definitely at least spraying a clear coat. So which is better and why..Krylon or Duracoat? Or are you pretty good either way? The only problem I have with Duracoat is that I need a rattle can. I don't have a paint gun or anything. Thanks!

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

I started using a $5 airbrush. It worked for years. Cheap to replace. Hook it up to your air compressor, regulate it to about 30PSI and you are good to go. If you think you are going to paint a few guns get a nice airbrush. They use less paint and can be adjusted to do fine lines and blending.

Duracoat is much more durable. Using an airbrush makes it easy to make it look good. Once Duracoat is applied properly brake cleaner wont get it off. Its pretty awesome stuff. Not as tough as Cerakote but easier to apply IMO.

Krylon has its place. I would do a base coat of Duracoat (or cerakote) in a light tan (tactical woodland tan is my favorite) and then after it cures add some krylon for camo if you want. Then if you dont like the camo or you want to blend in somewhere else you can use brake cleaner to get the Krylon off and then youll have a nice base coat.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

SBS, if you can, as Steve aluded to... a basecoat with a hardcore coating is a great way to go. Durocoat or Cerakote.

Lowlight did a video not too long ago on ceracoat and did this very thing on the video.

Krylon and Duracoat aren't really the same class of coating.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

If I want to add a gray, can I just spray it over the black finish that's already there?

Also I read that you can clear coat the blued barrels to keep them shiny and protected, and then you also don't have to keep oiling them. Any thoughts on that?

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

you could just spray over the black with the gray, but that'll leave area for moisture to get under the paint and start corrosion.

if anything, if you want to keep a black look, sparay it black then the gray over it. other than scrapping off some of the finish, you should have a good coat of protection that you will not have to wipe down with oil everytime you touch it. i'd take the action out of the stock too, and spray where you can't see for added protection.

krylon - cheap, easy to spray, easy to touch up after a season of hunting. easy to remove if you want to go another direction....

duracoat - pricey, but you get what you pay for - finish lasts a "lifetime" and alot more durable than krylon. resists normal wear and tear. tough to remove if you decide you want to go another direction....

the problem with clear coating it (in my opinion) is that any knicks or scratches you may get in the clear finish (krylonish type paint) will allow the moisture to start getting in under the paint = rust! being clear, it's tough to spot.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

What exactly are you going to paint?
Stock only?
Action only?
I have used Brownells Gunkote and Alumahyde with a HVLP detail gun and an airbrush from harbor freight for awhile now and couldn't be happier.
The key to all of the coatings is prep work before you ever spray anything.
Also pay attention to the temperature and humidity in your work area.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

If you want to protect your rifle from rusting, Send it to me here in Montana. Our dry climate really is a blessing to fine blued steel.
A little oil is needed from time to time but we have nothing like the rust problems down in FL.

I would duracoat the whole action and barrel black. It can be stripped off with a certain stripper if you dont apply it right. I purposely do that on my scopes so if I want to sell them they look like new.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

I am looking to paint both the stock and barrel.

For the barrel, I know I need to wipe it down with alcohol to remove any oil, and of course make sure it's dry. Is there any other prep work that needs to be done to the barrel before I spray it?

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

Duracoat no doubt. This stuff is epoxy paint and will not wear or come off with chemicals. Krylon sucks in my opinion, break clean takes it off and I love to wash guns and parts with brake clean.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

Like Stillbuster said... Your spray gun and even a small air compressor, Harbor Freight is a great place to get it cheap, especially if this is all for which you will be using this rig. My gun is completely Duracoated and I love it!! Tough as nails thats for sure!!

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

^ Thanks for the tips. I actually looked into cerakoting the barrel since I had my bolt done and loved the way it came out. The problem is I don't have a spray gun, and my (piece of crap) oven is too small to fit my whole barrel in anyway. So duracoat seems to be the next best way to go.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

DuraCoat is alot easer to work with. Just make sure you prep the metal. Degrease and blast with 120 grit aluminum oxide. If you don't have access to a blaster, try to scuff it good with 120 grit paper. MAKE SURE THE METAL IS CLEAN.
The outcome depends on you prep work.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

^ Looks like I'll be making a trip to home depot today.

One more question. If I strip paint off the barrel, does it take the blu off too? Not really a big deal. Just would like to know.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

Ok. Well thanks for all of the info guys. I really appreciate it. I think I have everything I need to go ahead. I'll probably come back here to post a pic when I'm done. Thanks again!

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

If you Duracoat test the color before spaying your gun. The color is not always the same as the charts.

If you change you mind on color after Duracoating, it is easier to just put a different color over it than to remove it. Duracoat does not build up like most paint it is very thin and can be painted over. That is what I have heard.

I am also contemplating buying a airbrush kit from Harbor Freight and attempting to Duracoat. Krylon is easier, but you still have to go through all the steps. So if you are sure of the results you want and you feel comfortable doing a camo job, then go for the Duracoat.

It is also best to disassemble as much of the gun as you can be for painting. And as stated preparing the gun is critical. I used to paint cars and 90% of the work is in preparation (and also masking, etc.). Look forward to seeing your gun after you do it.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

+1
A buddy of mine that does Duracoat was going to spray some blank dog tags. The plan was to put them on a key ring so he could show customers what the color would actually look like. I'm not sure if he did it or not but it seemed like a pretty good idea to me.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

I wouldn't even start to compare Duracoat to Krylon.
One will chip, fade, scratch and look bad in six months while duracoat if done right will look good for many years to come.
My rifle from six years ago still looks like the day I painted it. With an airbrush it is easy to do.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

I actually just got done putting it back together with a few coats of gloss black krylon to the barrel. It looks freaking amazing. I tried to get some pics but my battery is dead, and it literally takes all night to charge.

I did the krylon first to really see if I liked the way the rifle looks. Just really had to satisfy my curiosity. That way if I didn't like it I could just strip it off. However, I am completely satisfied with it.

I know this won't last so it's time for duracoat! There's actually a certified coater 45 minutes from me, so I don't even have to do anything through the mail. Thanks again guys for all of your advice. I'll see if I can get a pic up tomorrow.

Re: Krylon or Duracoat?

^ I checked that kit out. Nice!

Well here's a shot of a few sprays of rattle can. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. Anyway, this is what I'll be looking for out of Duracoat...

Personally I think this goes a ton better with the rifle than the blu barrel. JMO.

Sorry I didn't read your post before mine, I was responding to the first question of the thread.
