Kudos to Desert Precision

I've been shooting a CZ 457 for a couple of years now. Shortly after getting it, I upgraded to. Lilja barrel and did several modifications to make the rifle suit me. Somewhere along the lines, I lost my OEM extractor.

As some of you may know, some OEM parts for the 457 are as rare as chicken teeth. Since losing the original, I've tried 3 other extractor sets, none of which worked and all of which needed modification to get some semblance of function.

As a final resort, I finally got my hands on a Talon Extractor from Desert Precision Gunworks. The extractor worked very well, but I still had problems with ejection, so I sent DSP an email.

I didn't just get an email response, but got a phone call from Kenny himself. He took the time to walk me through what to try and assured me that if it didnt work, we would get it working.

Given what customer support usually amounts to these days, I just felt compelled to say something after this experience with Desert Precision.

Good to hear. Care to reveal what the fix was? I also have a 457/Lilja/Talon combo with ejection issues. Extraction is fine.

As I understand it, the extractor has little to do with ejection and the angle of ejection. The extractors only job is to hang onto the casing and was designed to actually bite into the casing. It is the holder (or tensioner, as he called it) that determines the angle of ejection. He suggested first polishing the holder so that it will let go of the casing consistently. If that doesn't work, then putting a 45 degree level on the holder, being sure to leave at least 1/16 of an inch of width on the holder. I was told that when tuning and slowly ejecting a spent case, what I want to see is the empty case tilting up to a 45 degree angle toward the ejection port as the holder let's go.

I hope I articulated that well enough.

Although we didn't exchange pictures, what I envision is a 45 degree bevel on the under side of the holder with the flat of the bevel parallel to the bolt. Kenney described it as a bevel similar to the one on the extractor.

Im gonna tear into mine tonight. If I get it right, I'll post something.

I can vouch for the DI Talon extractors for the 457 as well. They extract match ammo from a match chamber.
