I painted my AR-15, Rem 700, and M1A in a Multi Camo Paint SCHEME USING KYRLON Camo Paint. Now a local gun smith tells me that when the barrel gets hot the paint will melt and ETCH the barrel!
Is this true?

The only thing that is going to etch, is the razor blade into the metal when you are scrapping the kylon off because it will not stick.

won't etch, just will be kinda sticky(IME) when warm or where you hold it for long periods. I often play with krylon paint to show a customer what type camo I will be putting on

So far, I haven't had any problems. At the Sacramento Valley gun range, I've fired 3 30 round mags through my AR-15 as fast as I could pull the trigger. And man did it get hot! I noticed the Paint on the Noveske "flaming pig" lost it's Flat appearance, and is now kind of semi gloss. But no other problems were found.
Thank you for replying.

So far, I haven't had any problems. I've taken all of my weapons with me at one time or another into the Rockies or Sierras, and only experienced a few nicks(I think the paint even protected it as well). These were patched up without a problem as soon as I got home. I have fired at least, a couple hundred rounds through them all and have had no problems. A buddy of mine suggested cleaning the parts with brake cleaner before painting (He uses it for everything, hygiene too I think),
which I did. Maybe that helped the paint to stick better.
