I heard the proper pronunciation is not la-POO-uh, it's la-PWAH. I immediately said that has to be wrong, because the former is a masculine sound, while the latter is a ww2 French army rifle that can almost always be found unfired, and only dropped once.

I've always said it LAP-oo-uh, probably because it's just one letter removed from "Laputa" and a movie I like pronounces that as "LAP-yoo-tuh" instead of "La-POO-tuh" as a Spaniard might...

I actually asked a guy I know who's originally from Sweden. He said the correct Finnish pronunciation is Lah-Puah.

English is one of the very few languages with long and short vowels and it makes English speakers sound pretty stupid when they try to pronounce stuff in almost any other language.

I LOL when I hear most people try to pronounce Spanish words.

When I saw this thread this morning, I had to check my calendar to make sure that I hadn’t woken up in 2010. It’s been a while since this subject appeared here.

At least someone piped up with ‘loopholed’ to get that out of the way. Now we just need to discuss Hodgdon, which I’m sure is pronounced as Hog-dung. :ROFLMAO:

I try to correctly pronounce names. Sometimes you don't know until you do. Leo-poled? Haha. La-POO-ah, hahaha. I'm still unsure about Hornady. Horn-addie or Horn-a-day? When I hear Leupold and Lapua mangled I just roll my eyes. Looks like some here revel in their ignorance. You do you.

Who really gives a rats ass as long as the those involved understood the conversation.
If you need to correct the way I pronounce a word in order to express your intellect. I would rather you just ask to hump my leg.
More than likely I will just tell you to go fuck yourself with your superiority complex.

I dated a beautiful tall Finnish girl many years ago and *she* pronounced it "Lah-Pooh-Ah" so I have always pronounced it the same.

She was fabulous and so tall, jeez she was a tall girl. She was so tall I think she was the first girl I ever had to go up on.

VooDoo

Never understood why the gun industry has so many goofy ass, hard to pronounce correctly names. I know, foreign shit and all, but rename it for us rednecks please!

Maybe you should just stick to shit that your offended intellect can deal with pronouncing, rather than having to learn the smallest thing that ain't sufficiently 'Merican enough for you.

So a guy from Sweden tells you how to pronounce a Finnish name?! Well, Sweden is next to Finland, so I'll defer to him. But that means there are at least THREE ways to pronounce Lapua:
la-POO-uh (American style)
la-PWAH (feminine)
LAP-uah (correct?)

Leupold optics: I know it's LEW-pold. It's NOT LEE-uh-pold. Nor is it Lew-uh-pold.

Fiocchi ammo: fee-OH-kee.

And that concludes today's lesson in the trivial and absurd.

I still prefer Loopholed. Easier to remember.
