Is anyone else sick of being laid off! Man! I returned home from deployment in January (guard) and have not been back to work yet! I'm a well driller (water) so new housing is a big part of our business around here and it just isn't happening! I just got done reloading 1000 rounds of 223 in my single stage setup and think I may start on more. I get lots of range time but I kind of like my job too! What's everyone else do when they are out of work for a while? R.R.

nah, i used to work for an environmental company based out of houston. our projects normally worked out to where i would spend a week in houston preping, 2-3 months on the road, a week or so rigging down and reporting then a month or so at the house. during that month i always ended up doing odd and end jobs with buddys. mechanic work, carpentry, dirt work, whatever to pass the time.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

I just started calling myself retired. I don't see anything on the horizon and I'm at the age where I'll just be too old in a few more years.

I spend a lot more time on the range and in front of the load benches.

I figure we have three to five years before the country implodes, so it really doesn't matter.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Another SH member is a large crane operator in NV and was out of work for 7 months until recently when he got a job in UT at a large development near SLC. He's had to turn his life upside down to work the job as it's a four-hour drive from Carson. While not working, he was active in shooting and reloading.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Before getting onto my current project I was unemployed for five months. During that time I would go to the movies, reload or go to the range. At first it was great but as time went on and I couldn't find work it really sucked because I had all the time in the world but didn't want to spend any money as it wasn't coming in. Yeah being unemployed sucks. I hope things work out for you soon. All the best.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

I have been unemployed since May of last year . I cook , clean , run my kids around , reload , shoot , yard work , hunting , camping and darn near everything else I never had time for when I was working full time . I can't wait to go back to work but since it will mean going back on the road and living away from home I am soaking up as much family time as I can .

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Laid off five months in 2009,have been laid off again this year since end of Jan.2010.Thank god for my wife who has taken on the finances and I still have been able to make it to the range from time to time.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

I really like the time off and the freedom to pretty much do whatever I want.(Since I'm single) But now every time I think of something to do I write it down on a to do list.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

9 months now. 9 months and dozens of resumes and trying to remain upbeat. it's been brutal mentally.

you guys who are drillers might want to think about coming over here to PA. we have this marsallis gas field over here and they're drilling everywhere. and i mean EVERYWHERE.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

I got laid off in 2003 for the last time.
I now work for myself and choose the jobs I want to do and when I want to do them.
Plenty of time to do things I enjoy and good money too.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

what about contracting overseas for companies like Flour (took over for KBR), PAE-LM (africa & AFRICOM), DynCorp (Kuwait, Iraq), CSC (MRAP/HEAT Rollover, EST2000, MOUT)etc doing construction? I bet there is 2 dozen different construction contractors here building stuff.

If your a LEO MPRI has a good LEP program here in afghan

.mil MPRI, CSC, PEO-STRI, BAE, GDLS has the bulk of training contracts here. BAE & GDLS is fielding all the MRAP stuff.

Plus the gamut of OGA's in their compound within compounds.

here in bagram, Khandahar, and Kabul they are building shit like there is no tomorrow and they plan on expanding for the next 3 years. one of the guys i work with had a list of all the contracting companies here, i will see if i can find it and post them for you all

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

I've been off since 11/22/08. I worked as a boat mechanic for 22 yrs. 'till my back went out, & was moved into a supervisory position while my L&I was ongoing. Once they could legally do it, they laid me off, & with my injuries no one will hire me now. I live on a small island, & there are only 4 businesses still open for servicing boats, & they are hurting bad. No one on the mainland is hiring either, so I shoot as much as I can.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Was laid off for a few months last year. Corporate sent the work 2 months before they shut the plant down so I scrimped, saved and worked all the overtime I could. Put enough away to pay my portion of the bills for a while and still had enuff to take some time to do some work around the house and whatever else I wanted. Well the plans changed into me having to use everybit of extra cash I had and then some to have the septic system redone on the house. So my job search started alot soon than I wanted.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

For the most part I've been outta work since 12/08. I'm a heavy equipment grading foreman and we built out way to far ahead during the boom, now everything we built is probably still more than 50% vacant.
Horsetrading gear is the only way I've been able to keep my addiction going........

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

The visual effects studio I worked at for the last couple of years shut down last fall when we finished "Shutter Island". Fortunately (or unfortunately in hindsight) most of us got absorbed by the parent studio to help out on "Alice in Wonderland." As soon as we wrapped that in early Feb, I started collecting unemployment for the first time in my life.

One upside of being unemployed: lots of free time to shoot in the desert

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

The county has road limits on now till the frost is out of the ground...so hopefully go back soon, may be a quick frenzy then a fizzle out, time will tell! You guys all sound like you got a lot of good jobs and good ideas!

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Thanks for the link RCN... little tired of the military side of things even though I know I can get paid for my experiance! I have been working on doing some security down in Haiti that will pay WELL! I love FEMA! I've seen them in action when hurricane Katrina hit! If a shit ton of lesbians want money for a natural disaster our government dishes it right out! What ever it takes to keep them happy, because they are better people than you are!

Thats what the hollywood government tells you anyway!

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Seriously, if anyone is really looking for good money and can get away for a while look into some of the private contractors working overseas! They make big bank at low risk! If you put any kind of real effort into it you could be a rock star compared to some of them! Seen it

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

That link you provided for PAE is tango uniform. I think this will do it for anyone looking for that site.

A major drawback of overseas work would be the inability to carry a weapon. Still, it would certainly be interesting to work in A-stan.

The multi-national peacekeeping force had an opening for my line of work. I applied for it but never heard a thing. The AO was the Sinai desert. The thought of scorpions was worrisome and vipers could be a real problem but the thing that worried me the most when applying was showing up on YouTube w/ 4 or 5 dudes in shamaghs (one with a long knife) standing behind me.

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

Some of these civilian contractor jobs would be the cats ass. I have worked alot with civilians over there working for support agencys in compliance, Hazmat and the MRAP service reps. They are living on cloud 9. They got balls but in the long run they are making out like bandits. Props to them as they still give up there time to support us troops, but.... they still make 3 to 4 to 5 times as much as the troops!

Re: Laid Off! Anyone else?

What's worse than being laid off? Being self employed. If you run out of work, you can't collect anything. As a home improvement contractor, I've been very lucky to have work lined up, but anything can happen at any time.
Kind of scary to think about.
