I am reloading for my Savage 12 LRP 260 and I recieved some 308 Lake City brass from a friend of mine, I ran 43 grns. of H4350 w/ 140 grn. Bergers. I had a hard time extracting the fired brass so seems way too hot. I had a member suggest turning the necks because this brass is known to be pretty thick. I have turned the necks, trimmed the brass, cleaned and uniformed the primer pockets and uniformed and de bured the flash hole, oh and I just bought a Hornady Lock-n-Load bullet comparator for seating dept. Should I try this load again now that I have done all of this or will I still have the same problem? The only reason that I ask this is because this has givin me my best 5 shot group. I ran another load this past weekend w/ 40grns. of H4350 & 140 grn. Bergers and my groups opened up to a little over 1". Any help with reloads for my 260 and the 140 Bergers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

I run 43 to 44 gr of H4350 with 142smk or 140 a maxes and so do most of the people I shoot with. Don't have any problems at all with remington or nosler brass. I know the military brass has thicker walls so case capacity is less so pressure will go up. Did you chrono the loads. Did you full length size, small base size, or body size the brass? Any pressure signs on the primers?

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

I full length sized them. I have not chrono them yet, I usually wait til I find a load that groups good before I do that. The primers were flat with just a small craeter that I could feel when I ran my finger accross it. I did loose 1 primer of 6 shots. The brass did not seem to show signs of over preasure. This brass was free so that is why I am using it, I have a little over 100 pieces.

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

My father-in-law has a Bohica .50 BMG upper for his AR and he loads Lake City brass(not hot loads either). But he has problems extracting the brass from his rifle also. And if he loads a something other than L/C, it extracts fine. The only thing that we can come up with is the metallurgy of the brass.

Above quote contains the answer to your question, the bottom line is case capacity.

I have run and still do use old LC brass, M852, M118 (the old stuff) people can say what they want about the brass but it is very good quality, has a good life span and with proper use of a chrony will be your friend.

Brass prep is good practice, but reduce your load work your way back up and run like hell!

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

That's good to know about the Lake City on both sides of the coin. I loaded some lighter loads and the Lake City extracted fine. The next question I have is, by turning the necks on the Lake City will this help with the extracting issues with the hotter loads? I'm thinking of loading a few rounds with the 43 grns. of H4350 to see if I have the same results. Thank you all for all of your help.

Where I come from, them thar are pressure signs. Just sayin.....

Seems like you are worrying the shit out of yourself and wasting a lot of time/other components so you can use 100pcs of "free" brass. I would think that a couple of bags of WIN 7-08 or REM 260 brass would be a lot less headache and cheaper than the "free" brass. YMMV......

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

I'm a little slow sometimes but I do eventually come around. It's a lot cheaper to go buy the brass than it is to keep burning up powder and waisting my Bergers. Thanks for the wake up call, that's why I like this forum because people are not afraid to say what's on their mind and most of the people on here are very helpful. I'm a former Professional Rodeo Bullfighter so I might have landed on my head one too many times.

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

Well my father-in-law and I come to the conclusion that LC brass for his .50 BMG with a head stamp of 06 and later will not extract without help. But LC with a headstamp of 05 and earlier will extract easily with no help. The only thing that we can think of is that there is just something wrong with the brass composition of the 06 and later brass.

What will the chronograph do for you? I dont have one and looking to get one.

Re: Lake City Army Match Brass

Well I reloaded a few loads this weekend with some necked down 308 winchester brass and it looks like that Lake City Brass, free or not will be collecting lots of dust. I loaded 42 grns. of H4350 after turning the necks, trimming the brass, uniforming and deburing the flash holes. Absolutely no signs of over preasure and my groups tightened up below 1" @ 100. .73 to be exact with 5 shots.
