you are correct. the number is the year manufactured.
the breakdown for LC brass is:

LC ##/ used for machine guns (has primers crimped)

LC Match ## standard 168 grain Sierra used for M1A's an rifle competitions, also used for sniper/ designated marksmaen training. Not intended for combat used. has Ridges around base of caseing. productioned stoped in 1995 (no crimp in primers)

LC LR ## standard 175 SMK used and designed as the match stuff but was intended for combat use, currently still in production.

I just wasn't sure that was right. I have a big pile of LC brass and wasn't sure if it was 78 or 87. Either way I guess its a pretty old pile and looks pretty good for its age.
