I have a set of Burris Extreme 30mm Rings that were lapped when they were on a Tikka T3. I just got my new Viper PST and don't have enough funds left to buy the rings I want (seekins) so will it be OK to use the Burris rings that have been lapped on my remington with the PST? Do the rings need to be relapped? Also, any tricks to keep from getting ring marks? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lapped rings on a different rifle?

Just to make sure that I'm clear on the concepts.

Moving a base from one rifle to the next can cause enough distortion in the base (and thus the ring alignment) so that the rings should be re-lapped to get the alignment back?

Would it matter if the base had been bedded to make the stress on the base as close to zero as possible?

Thanks...

Re: Lapped rings on a different rifle?

Guys are telling him to re-lap because he's moving rings that were lapped from a rifle that had a two piece base to a rifle that will have a one piece rail. Chances are, there will be some mis-alignment. If he was moving the same one piece rail and rings that was bedded from one rifle to another rifle and bedded there, then there would be little to no misalignment.

Ahhh, that makes sense.

Lapped them last nite, they didn't need too much, but you can tell where it removed some material from. Turns out the rings were higher than i like so I'm gonna be buying new rings anyway. Thanks for the advice, always good to learn somthing new.

Re: Lapped rings on a different rifle?

Yes, the alignment will most likely be different when moving rings between rifles regardless if the base is 1 pcs or 2 and bedded or not. Does not mean you have to lap them but you should check them if you want to know if they are aligned or not.

All you have to do to check them is to take the lapping bar without any compound and slide it back and forth a couple of times in the rings. Your contact area will be clearly marked and you can decide if its good enough or not.

FWIW - I alway bed my bases and check the alignment with my lapping bar. Probably 60% are fine with no lapping, 35% are a judgement call on what you want to do and 5% are really bad and must be lapped or fixed if you don't want to put ring marks in your scope tube.

Buy new rings?

Potentially warping the internal diameter of some rings, so you can cheap out and not buy new ones, makes little sense...
