I had been reading about how I should lap the scope rings before mounting my scope. I called the rings manufacturer TPS who said that using a lapping bar on their rings voids their warranty since their rings are precision milled and require no lapping. Does this sound true? I am mounting my scope on my Rem 700 5R with a new EGW 20moa Picatinny rail.

Re: Lapping bar for mounting my scope

The rings could be perfect sitting in the box, but once you mount them to a rail that might be *slightly* out of flat or straight, or mount that perfect rail to a less than perfect receiver, well things get out of whack.

You can bed the rail to the receiver, that will eliminate a large part of the misalignment potential, but may still have to lap them to get perfect alignment.

Win308, ask yourself this:

What is worth more to you, warranty replacement value on a set of rings, or, ensuring that your scope works properly, AND lasts, because the body is not twisted/torqued improperly to begin with? Which would NOT be covered under warranty to begin with.

Just my thoughts.

Yeah, they're pretty pricey. I bought 12" of steel 1.25" bar from the local steel supplier. I think it was $5. Might have been $8. Don't remember. Took my scope to the gunsmith and had him turn the bar to the OD of my scope. Works perfectly. I think he refused my money, but I gave him $10. CHEAP!

And I would never buy their rings again. How in the hell can lapping rings void a warranty? Total BS!

Re: Lapping bar for mounting my scope

What could happen to a set of rings that a little lapping could void the warranty?? I do not think I would buy their product if they told me that.

You can pick up lapping bars and compound on E-Bay for a pretty good price. Personally I do not care what any ring mfr. says. For what I pay for my scopes I am going to lap the rings. Tom.

Re: Lapping bar for mounting my scope

PM me. I have one. Got to have it returned though. You pay shipping both ways and we're GTG.

Perfectly milled my ass. I love TPS rings because the
nice rounded corners and the fact that they are cheap.
Voiding the warranty......who gives a shit about their
warranty? I don't want to void my scope. I have mounted
over 20 sets of their rings, and I have yet to find a perfect
pair from them. 20 minutes and a lapping bar and they can be
perfect enough.

Even if they were perfect, which they are not, when you mount
them on a scope base that has "tolerances" on an action that
was put on a belt sander after machining, things are not going
to line up. Unless you are lucky. If you have a perfect rail
and put it on a custom action, they may line up just fine. On
a factory action? Good luck. I lapped in a pair last week that
took over 30 minutes because it was so far out.

Re: Lapping bar for mounting my scope

I won't lap scope rings. None of the quality products I've bought from TPS, Badger, Leupold, or Warne have needed lapping.
