anything cheap to use besides ordering some expensive stuff at brownells? i just need a little to smooth some things out. was thinking auto parts or ive heard tooth paste. any ideas?

order what you need here and have at it. scrape it into a powder and add your favorite oil to make a paste. Do it while shooting by applying with a cotton patch and cleaning rod or as described below.

You can also use valve lapping compound. Available at any auto parts store.

Personally, I find 'valve lapping compound' way too coarse. Even the "two part" kit that has both "coarse" and "fine" are in the area of 125 grit and 230-250 grit.
Myself, for anything to do with firearms, I prefer to finish off with 600 grit at least, and sometimes go up to 1000.
I haven't seen an auto-parts store that carries anything near that. Order special for you, maybe. But haven't seen anything like that on the shelves.
Now specifically, there was a thread about this, that C. Dixon was involved in with some really good information. I suggest a bit of searching, as it IS here.... somewhere. Sorry but I forget where.

McMaster/Carr or CW Rod carries the finer lapping compounds, let your fingers do the walking.

Valve lapping paste cheap and works well and is available in different grits also really fine metal polish cutters if you want a really fine polish
