Rifle Scopes Lapping Rings Correctly?

Got a nice piece of 30mm Bar Stock and placed it in my rings..snugged them down a little..with a little fine compound i rotated the bar...

Only wear showing is the highest section of the top ring and lowest on the bottom with a bare line of metal from front to back...

Is this normal? to start with...dont wanna go any farther in case im doing it wrong.

i always just do the bottoms mounted.....don't go crazy !
