In the WTF were they thinking category... I was reading that Lapua is launching a new bullet with tighter tolerances than their standard bullets with more concentricity and more uniform weights.

They will mark this new bullet WITH A LAPUA "L" ON THE HEEL OF THE BULLET. That's right... they are stamping the part of the bullet with the most impact on accuracy with their brand. They claim this won't affect accuracy, but they are selling this to people who measure brass weight to the nearest tenth of a grain, measure base to ogive length, turn necks, and sort by concentricity. I have to think that it is a step forward with the tighter tolerances and two steps back with the stamp.

This is a pretty big marketing snafu. Article is here.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

According to the article and the photo supplied, the stamping doesn't come any where near the edge. I might be concerned if it did. But the photo shows it nowhere near the edge surface where it breaks over. I think it's a non issue.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

It probably makes no difference at all. But it is the one thing I would change. If Remington started stamping their logo in every chamber, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference in accuracy... but it would be a bad idea.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

I would bet the "L" is on the face of the forming die punch and is imprinted during the forming process and NOT stamped after the bullet is finished. That will have absolutely no effect on the final accuracy.

I'm sure that Lapua has shot a few test rounds. If they say it won't matter, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure that they're not going to trash their reputation for the sake of vanity.

I'd personally like to know what tolerances they're focusing on and to what degree vs. the standard match grade fodder they offer to us.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

I agree. They do have some knowledge of how to make a bullet. Shooting matches for F-Class I sort bullets and brass. One less step. If shooting regulars and Lapua L bullets. Don't mix them up.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

Only in 6mm right now and I don't even see them for sale in the regular online retailers.

Will be interesting to see when they get to a caliber I can shoot(.224,6.5,.308,.338) I will definitely pick up a box to test out.

Re: Lapua "L" Bullets

I have heard rumors in finish that the reason for the L-bullet was the fact that Lapua never got the 105:s right,

they never seemed to shoot as well as the 90 grain scenar,

ergo they started there improved version of bullets with those

If I am lucky I might get to see some of them being shot in the coming months.
