I just shot my first 50 of the Lapau Palma small rifle brass and my depapping pin is to big to fit through the flash hole. I have a set of RCBS Gold Metal dies. They uses the headed pin and I can't find the smaller size pin for the SR primers anywhere. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Any ideas? Thinking I'm going to have to contact RCBS.

Re: Lapua Palma die decapping pin

What I did for mine was swap out the pin from my 223 dies.
or like you mentioned contacting RCBS for a new decapping pin. They have the best customer service, hands down.

How did you like the brass with the small rifle primers.

Re: Lapua Palma die decapping pin

To decapp some Guatemalan brass one time, I had to take the 0.065 pin from my 223, chuck it up in my lathe, and lap it down to 0.061 in order to make it fit.

Sometimes, you just have to use you head, and the tools you have available.

Re: Lapua Palma die decapping pin

0.061 may not be small enough. Lapua 6mm BR and 6.5x47L brass that I've used had flash holes more on the order of 0.058-0.059".

You may need to either find a true 'PPC' sized decapping pin - Sinclair Int'l makes a fancy decapping die with an optional PPC pin; it has a similar 'shouldered' design to the RCBS dies so you might be able to just order the pin and see if it works in your existing dies, otherwise you may have to just suck it up and buy the Sinclair decapping die, pins and all.

Another option may be to order a PPC sized flash hole reamer from Sinclair Int'l or Russ Haydon Shooter supply. I don't know about the Sinclair, but the Russ Haydon tool cuts 'em ~0.061-0.062". You may still need the extra small decapping pin just to have enough clearance in the hole to keep from getting stuck...

Re: Lapua Palma die decapping pin

I've got a Sinclair flash hole reamer but I guess I'm just going to get RCBS to send me a smaller decapping pin first and try that. If that doesn't work I'll have to get that fancy decapping die from Sinclair. I don't like the idea of adding another step to my relaoding but I like the Palma brass pretty well. I only shot it in a Factory Savage at around 950 yards and it seemed to have less vertical spread than normal, but I've only used it once. I did chrono it but I haven't look to see how much velocity I lost compared to the Lapua LR primer brass. It's a little more trouble than I thought, oh well. Thanks gentlemen

Or a #52-#49 drill bit and a lathe to mount the case, and have done with it.
