I realize OAL is really meaningless and the Ogive is what really matters. But recently I loaded up a bunch of 77gr Noslers and I noticed a large variation.

I have found that there is basically two groups of lenths of projectiles in the bulk 1000 piece box I got. One group of projectiles is .892" and the others are .880". If you look at the loaded rounds below they almost look like two different types of ammo or projectiles.

My load data from my recipe is 2.255" OAL, but now I dont know if I'm getting the seating depth I want. Is there a tool out there that I can measure from the Ogive so I can know the exact seating depth I want?

Re: Large OAL variation

caliper type bullet comparator , like the hornady tool will measure the ogive to base of a loaded round.

.010 difference from a batch of 1000 is not that bad. I got around 400 .510 750 gr amax's and they had a .020 difference. So .010 isnt bad.

"My load data from my recipe is 2.255" OAL,"

IF you mean that's book OAL, it's meaningless to YOU; find your own best jump to the lands.

Re: Large OAL variation

I had the same issue with 175 Nosler Custom Competitions that they were way off and caused my OAL to vary as well as the OGIVE measurements. I sent them back to Nosler and they said it was out of spec and they would send me a new box in which they did. The second box was much better and my lengths stabled out to normal bullet variations.

Re: Large OAL variation

Bullets made from different dies will be different - tip length. Even setting seating depth with ogive - tip length differences will show.

No I was trying out different things and a certain recipe made amazing groups, but now I think I have to start all over again because I really dont know the true seating depth

Re: Large OAL variation

That'll do it. I have a different one shaped like a nut with a different size of each side. Works about the same way.
