I'm pretty sure and am not going to guess but I'm pretty sure I loaded about 6 cases with a cci large pistol primer instead of a large rifle primer .

What will this affect and how can I get the primer out ... Or can I shoot it ?

Re: Large Pistol Primer in 308 case

The LP primer is .010" shorter than a LR primer, so it should appear more recessed than the others.

I don't know what the compound differences are, or cup thickness. Ican say I wouldn't be afraid to actually use them IF it was all I had and I NEEDED ammo.

You can just decap them the same way you do a spent primer.

Re: Large Pistol Primer in 308 case

They will appear more recessed if you used a seating tool that seated the primer to the bottom of the pocket. The Dillon sets them all .002 max below the case head (in MY Dillon) because of the built in stop.

Don't use them, tear them down. Your average .45 acp is 15-16k cup pressure. Your average .308 with 175 is about 50K pressure. I'd rethink my face an eye safety first before I'd pull that trigger.

...??

10mm takes an LP primer, and is a 40ksi (EASY) cartridge.

How about 44mag?

500 SW mag (before starline switched to LR)?

These are all high pressure cartridges and take LP primers, so I don't believe pressure is the issue.

Re: Large Pistol Primer in 308 case

Only 6 cases? Just put the primed brass in the rifle and fire them off at the range and then just deprime and reprime with right primers.

Re: Large Pistol Primer in 308 case

Thank you guys for all you responses . I'm going to just put them in my gun at the end of my next range trip and pull the trigger . So I can then clean the gun .....

Any other precautions I should take ?

Turbo, to each his own bro. The OP asked for advise. I gave him my two cents. If something bad was to happen firing them I have done my due diligence for safety. IMO. If You could just swap them without any effects they wouldn't be LP LR primers they'd be large primers period. OP it's ultimately your call. But in my opinion I would not fire them as a live round, just popping the cap would be fine. Your call. My advise.

IF they are just primed, run them though a decap die normally. Just don't let a collection of live caps accumulate in your spent cap tray.

Re: Large Pistol Primer in 308 case

They are not loaded so I'm just going to pop them off after the next range trip . Then decap them I have been told to deprime them while still live but I'm to lazy to move all the powder and live rounds away from the press .

Don't mischaracterize my posts, please.

I made absolutely NO assertion LP and LR primers were the same, NOR did I advise the OP to simply use them. Rather, I noted the differences between them that I KNOW of, and gave him correct instruction on how to remove them.
