So with the last U.S lead smelter closing its doors on Dec31st, how do you think this will effect shooting sports?

I think it will lead to an increase in idiotic ill informed posts on msg boards all over the internet.

Copper is what they want to make bullets out of when they can't use lead. That's going to make a huge demand in copper.

The closure won't affect the shooting sports. It's the govt that will eventually affect whether it not we will be able to use lead bullets. Protecting us from ourselves...

A lot will depend on the government trying to control the ammo industry. Via reloading components or % of lead in bullets. US is changing I hate it for the young people of this country.

[H]ow do you think this will effect shooting sports?

I don't think it will hurt Barnes Bullets one bit. :D

The Military is looking to completely make the switch, as they are the biggest 'polluter' of lead back into the earth.

Hopefully the military will now switch to SILVER AZIDE in caps & initiators too! :p

Seriously though, that Cowboy Shooting Sport crowd is going to have to have a grand consensus on what the heck they are going to do. When the gov starts clamping down on lead sales there will be No more casting bullets at home & no more shooting them into earth!

Might be good money to develop a COST EFFECTIVE target - bullet trap though!

I think they need to make bullets out of gold. It doesn't pollute the environment and everyone would be digging it up to recycle.

The amount of copper used in projectile manufacturing is no where near being able to have a measurable impact on the global market, now nor in the future.

+1000

This needs quoted for emphasis along with a reminder of the old addage:

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

...but then again this is the internet!

I shoot a ton of lead bullets, in rifle and pistol/revolvers.

My problem is our range is constantly on my but to clean the lead traps. Apparently not many people cast bullets around here.

I can only store so many bullets. Thing about lead is we can shoot it over and over again, it doesn't wear out.

There will always be scrape lead. The more "green" people get, the more scrape lead that will be available.

It will have a dramatic impact on bullet pricing... because idiots just need one good reason to store up another 10,000 bullets that they will never shoot. The same reason that people were buying up hundreds of pmags in anticipation of a magazine ban that was never on the table. Who will go through 100 pmags in their lifetime?

Just got a response from Berger about the closure today. No change to production since they do not even use them. There is nothing to this "Rumor" perpetuated by the Foxtards Morons!!

"Hello Jason,

We sincerely appreciate your concern. If you are speaking specifically about the Doe Run Company plant being closed, this will have no effect on our production capabilities since we do not purchase our lead from them.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions and I will be happy to help.

You know Jason, it is great people like you that make this forum so great. Thank you for getting DIRECT information from LEAD sources regarding the issue, instead of second hand sensationalists in the news media. Thank you.

i think most zombies will now need two to the head to bring them down if there is a higher use of eco safe gilded metal bullets, especially in CA.

thank goodness it will NOT affect werewolf eradication.

Still doesn't mean that copper prices will go up. It is also a fallacy that even if legislation against lead bullets came about, that the only answer is copper bullets. There are steel core bullets, like the former Eastern block made LOTS of. Or other metals that can be used. Copper is only one choice.

And that article has so many errors, starting with "bullet producing lead smelter." The plant in question smelts lead ORE into pure lead. They do not make bullets. They do not even many bullet alloys. They do not smelt lead for recycling. LEAD ORE ONLY. And there are many other plants around the world doing that.

The ban on lead bullets has nothing to do with the shutdown of this plant. The owners decided it was cheaper to shut the plant down, and increase operations in their plants outside the US. So the big loss is the US jobs from this plant. Just as much lead is being smelted.

And bullet making is a very small percentage of the use of lead.

As it has been stated before. The only problem is uninformed and scared people going out and buying up all the ammo due to media spin causing a great deal of uncertainty...... John Maynard Keynes is turning in his grave.

What do I know about supply and demand I'm just an economist :)

People just need to relax. I am grateful that some hide members retrieved good information from the sources to clear it up. Don't need more speculation being read then having some Joe tell his friends as fact.... Don't get me started on speculation...

Ok I'm good now.
