I ran 100 virgin 30-06 over a sinclair expander mandrel (each shell up, twist, up again), then I attempted to turn them on my K&M neck turner, wouldn't twist over it and barely got on it. Tried it on my Hornady cutter mandrel and slipped right on.

measured K&M mandrel and it was .307, went and measured the Hornady mandrel and it was .304. measure the inside of the brass at .305-.306, so I'm getting springback after running over the expander mandrel.

Anneal and run over expander again?

thoughts, suggestions?

I have several expander mandrels. It's generally suggested to buy the expander mandrel from the company that makes the neck turner. I know that between some there are as much as .003" Don't expect something that tight to turn freely.

What are you trying to accomplish? Is the brass not of uniform length in the virgin state?

Not talking about trimming to length, but of neck turning to uniform tension. After it gets uniformed it will be run through a redding bushing die for tension.

When you find the mandrel that works right, be sure to keep plenty of lube on it. I mix 50 : 50 of STP oil treatment and 5W-30 synthetic oil. That much will last you a life time.

Also something to think about. I double rinse my finished brass in lighter fluid to get all the oil & residue out of it. Blow it out with an air hose from both ends, and let it set overnight. Next day it'll be ready to go.

I use a K&M expanding mandrel and Pumpkin neck turner, never had a problem. I did however polish the mandrel to a chrome like finish so it wouldnt scratch the inside of the necks.

Are you trying to neckturn fired brass? if so, anneal it first then try again. I always neckturn brand new brass before being fired, so maybe thats why I have never ran into this problem.

No, this is virgin Nosler and Winchester brass. All the case prep has been done except the neck turning. I'm gonna go to Bruno's today and pick up the K&M expander die and mandrels and see if that helps. I'll chuck up the mandrel on the cutter and run some bore paste over it too, see if that helps.
