Help out there! I am reloading 308 for my Remingron 700 and I am using Lapua Brass. I am full length re-sizing, trimming, neck sizing, and I am seating @.010 off the lands, everything I can think of but every once in a while I get a round that fits too tight in the chamber. What can be going on? Is it the dies?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

What sort of press are you using? 0.010 seems a bit close and if its not a good press or your consistency is off a bit, you could be getting a few longer ones. I'm assuming you're using the same lot of bullets as well and measuring off the ogive and not the COAL since you are measuring from the lands.

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

Hi had the same problem with the exact same brass and dies I found that it was my fault I had not set the die to go down far enough and the last couple of thou would stop round from chambering properly.

It might be wise just to recheck your die settings again.
Hope this helps

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

Usinf a Forster Coax Press an each bullet is set to the ogive. When seating I back the die off, measure, turn it down, and then repeat until the measurement is right I learned the hard way about measuring the COAl, I loaded aboiut 200 rounds and only 50% of them would chamber. Had to pu;; bullets. What a pain!
Thanks for your reply!

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

It's not your bullet seating. Get a headspace comparator and FL size so you bump your shoulder back about .003 from what fired brass measures.

Or just unscrew die, close press and screw in until it's tight, the lower ram and size a piece and see if it chambers. Continue tightening FL die 1/8 turn at a time until it chambers with only a smudge of pressure on the bolt handle. Once there turn it in 1/16-1/8 more and lock it down.

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

It could also be the length of the case. What are you using to measure and trim the cases? I noticed my Lee trimmer is a bit longer than what the book says to trim them to. 2.00 I believe is what the book says and my Lee trimmer give me about 2.008. I'm currently waiting for my Wilson trimmer which is the mail right now.

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

Need more info. You stated you are full and neck sizing. Both every time or just full lenght at first? Does the empty brass chamber tight or just the loaded rounds. Could be a matter of a thick neck after bullet seating on select cases. If the brass always fits, then it points to a neck thing. How tight is tight? A long bullet seat will give a little resistance, a lot of resistance points to brass. If empty brass does it, turn down the full lenght die a little, that should take care of it. Eliminate one possibility at a time to narrow it down. Let us know what you find.

Re: Lee 308 Die Problems

As stated before, use a comparator to set up your dies. A great investment for the long run. Also, make sure you use a CONSISTENT ammount of lube on your cases when resizing. It's easy to let a case go that's a little "dryer" than most, and that WILL affect the sizing.
