Does it make sense in the northern hemisphere if you are shooting long range ?

I'm never going to be perfect enough on my wind call, technique etc to be 100% confident that any deviation between POI and POA is purely down to my physical location or bullet drift so is there any sense in just getting a left hand twist to cancel those two items out or at least negate them a little to the extent that I can almost completely ignore them ?

Just curious as I start thinking about a new barrel. Thx

Re: Left hand barrel twist ?

FYI, maybe you already know this, twist does not enter into the Coriolis calculation. If you are looking to offset your spin drift against coriolis, then yes, theoretically you can do this with a left twist in the northern hemisphere.

IMO, though, none of this is worth the hassle of finding a LH barrel.

Re: Left hand barrel twist ?

The deflection due to the Coriolis acceleration depends on the latitude of the firing site not on the direction in which you fire. A typical value is 1 cm to the right (in the northern hemisphere) for a range of 400 m. The drift at 400 m is about 2-3 cm (to the right or left, depending on twist). These are nice calculations but in practice it's meaningless.

Re: Left hand barrel twist ?

I use a smoothbore for all my 1000yd+ shooting. Spin drift and the coriolis effect used to worry me all the time using common rifled barrels, now it's just weight off my shoulders...

Love the nay Sayers, voodoo gods an all the others that chime in. Can anyone explain why in the northern hemisphere right hand rotation engines give/have less issue than left hand rotation engines? However when in the lower hemisphere it's the reverse. Source you may ask, US Navy, they learned from the LST's, LSC's an PT's that had both R/H and L/H engines. It's just a gear change whats the big deal? Ask any guy that owned both, before the rotations were changed in the marine gears of modern twin + wheel boats
Things you can't easily see or understand, are easy to dismiss. Most of the time it's easier to just let it go an laugh, than trying to explain to those who have already made up their minds.
