Amazon said Thursday it was bailing on locating its new campus in Queens, dealing a devastating blow to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio and costing the region up to 25,000 high-paying jobs.

“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” the online retail giant said in a statement that cited local opposition to the massive, heavily subsidized project.

“For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term,” the company said.

“While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”

The city and state came up with $3 billion in subsidies for one of the world’s richest companies, infuriating local opponents, including state Sen. Michael Gianaris, the deputy majority leader.

Cuomo last week ripped Gianaris for his opposition, accusing him of committing “political malpractice.”

The company thanked both Cuomo and de Blasio, saying they “worked tirelessly” to promote the project.

And the company said it would abandon the search for a site for its new campus, dubbed HQ2.

“We do not intend to re-open the HQ2 search at this time. We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the US and Canada,” the statement said.

A person involved in the Long Island City Amazon development, who was not authorized to speak on the record, lamented the decision.

“It’s a sad day when a minority of loud voices can rule. This was something to help diversify the city from its reliance on finance jobs,” the source told The Post.

“There were already talks underway for Amazon to provide local workforce training; that was part of the deal.”

Tough shit.......you reap what you sow. You keep electing these dumb bastards, but you don't like the results ? Try being a Conservative in Washington State......see how you like it.

I don't like amazon and I don't like ny state. I'm actually not unhappy about any of it. They deserve each other.

3 Billion in Taxpayer funds given to the richest man in the world with the promise of "up to 25,000" jobs.....
Full on Corporate socialism on display.

The hard working middle class get raped to pay for the lowest class who won't work and the richest class who don't think they should.

I'm glad it got kicked in the nuts. Even for NY, 3 Billion is crazy.

Too bad we couldn't get AOC and Bezos locked into a TV interview room together and have fun watching.

I wish both sides would just disappear.

Did you note the news yesterday that Amazon paid $0 in taxes for 2018.

I don't begrudge them that.

They are not being hauled in to court so they are complying with tax law....its just that the tax laws are fucked.

Add to that that Amazon gets a deal from the govt of New York that shifts more burden on the taxpayer.

Just play the whole tax code straight across the board.

Everyone needs to pay in to the public burden.

Businesses avoiding taxes and 48% of the people being excused from paying taxes means a smaller pool has to pay the full share.

As it is not really realistic to figure the next years balance and than divide it equally amongst each individual tax paying entity/individual the most progressive tax system I accept is the traditional 10% tithe.

No one pays more than 10% - rich, poor, business what have you. If your income is through labor, business deals or from the public treasury you pay 10%.

With the size of our economy if the govt cant live off that fuck em.

The only other option is as we did it before 1916 - Tarriff the shit out of everything coming in to the country than sales and sin taxes on shit you buy.

Cuomo can eat a dick for shifting tax burdens to the people, AOC can eat a dick for being a socialist, Bezos can eat a dick because he is a two faced Dr Evil fuck.

The payroll taxes are a part of employee compensation, even if most of their employees don't know it. It is part of the cost burden of that employee, the gov just wants that sent direct so the dumb-masses don't ever get to see it leaving their back account. Well Played Gov Assholes... Well Played...

what kind of knot in his tie is that, grand-o-knot or something

If you do a search for the number of people that Amazon employs you will see a lot of differing numbers. This website shows 350,000. The tax breaks Amazon gets may be huge, but the amount of payroll taxes paid annually by the people they employ is in the billions.

https://www.geekwire.com/2017/amazon-surpasses-350000-employees-43-last-year/

So the people pay for it anyway.
Why do I see tax payers paying for Amazon's anything as ridiculous?
A product of Gov official/Gov screwing the tax payers under the guise of revenue.
Maybe they should build another fucking stadium for another billionaire.

I think it would be much simpler (hence why it would never happen), to just simply eliminate all taxes and replace them with a single 10% national sales tax on everything, no exceptions, and the states / feds can decide how they want to split that. Then all imports into the country by corporations are also taxed 10% Then also charge a 10% tax on money that you send out of the country

Pretty good chance that would take care of most of the tax avoidance schemes these big companies come up with.
