I bought a suppressor from a local gun shop. The suppressors are locally made. So I thought hey keep the money in the community. What a mistake, the guy that makes them I found out (the hard way) is incompetent that everyone that has one is having problems with them. So the question is can I have any machinist work on it or do they have to have a license to do so?

It's my understanding that once you take ownership you need to be with it when other people are handling it or they need to be a class 3 dealer if you are not going to be with it.

I'd call the ATF on that one. It depends on what specific machining needs to be done as well as what effect that work would have on any dimensional aspect of the suppressor. Similar to the majority of government regs, the verbiage surrounding this aspect is pretty vague. Hence, your safest route would be contacting your local ATF branch to discuss.

There is very little a non-FFL can legally do to repair a silencer.
