I was a member of snipers hide some years ago and i have decided to return, I built this rifle in 2013 it's a Remington 700 sps tactical in 223, it has an swfa super sniper 10x42 mil/mil scope on it and a one piece 0 degree steel scope mount base, I can't remember which brand but it cost $100, the stock is a choate tactical stock. I know it's not an expensive rifle build but it was what I could afford at the time and had alot of enjoyment out of shooting it. I have used this rifle to learn to shoot accurately with and do some varmint hunting, after I quit snipers hide many years ago and went to another precision shooting site which was folded in to snipers hide a few years ago and I quit using forums to learn to shoot and went out and burned alot of rounds learning to shoot. I learned slot building this rifle and i then put my efforts in to learning to reload precision. 223 ammunition.

The two photos 99% are of the accuracy of this rifle 1% me the jack rabbit was a head shot on a jack rabbit running directly away at about 300 yards (I know 300 yards is not a long range but it wasnt an easy shot in long grass and could only see its head when it was jumping on the run and I sequenced it and was a 1 shot kill ).
The target is a shot n see pistol target I used to zero my scope. The guy who's land I was on hasn't let me shoot with him since that day because he got mad and told me "to stop showing off"

Iam now looking at building a 308 precision rifle for shooting at longer ranges and may be try my skills (luck) at some competitions some time.

I have learned a lot lessons some of the wallet and some just humiliating myself (on this site go have a look if you want it's still there haunting me) . But to get told to stop showing off was the one that really got me mad because I spent alot of time learning to shoot accurately and I was only putting a zero on my scope at 100 yards. I have been hesitant about posting this, because I dont know what the response will be but it has been years now, I did make an ass out of myself many years ago and i have learned from it. Now I'll sit back and wait for the roast. I dont know if the head shot Jack rabbit photo is aloud but ill taken it down if someone gets offended.

Like you, I'm off and on over here depending on what bug has bit me of recent.

I too own an SPS Tactical that is incredibly accurate ...averaging .502 MOA for (5) five-shot groups at 100, and that was with one of those groups opening up to nearly 3/4 minute (69gr SMK handload). It now sits in a fully adjustable H-S stock, the McM A5 it previously wore having been sold to fund a divorce.

Mine now pulls duty as a pest controller on the ranch and occasional trainer for when I get a new shooter out here. Everyone that touches it seems to shoot sub-minute with it
...always getting up from behind the rifle with a huge smile.

I may have better and more refined rifles, but I'll never own a more enjoyable one.

Any reason you want to go 308 over a 6.5 variant?

A lot has changed since the hide moved and came back on it's own. Basically everyone buys custom actions and gets barrels shipped direct without a gunsmith ever seeing the action. Quite the time to want to do another build. The options arent just Remington or AI anymore

Welcome back to the forum! For me it has taken a lot of effort to become better and I'm still learning. It sounds like you've worked hard at becoming better with a rifle. I would be interested in hearing about some of the tough spots in learning for you. My current tough spot is not being able to remain relaxed until the shot breaks and through the shot.

As you probably already know, the .308 Win is a accurate cartridge and has a long barrel life. If you dont need the .308 for, let's say, a hunting round, you might consider one of the 6mm or 6.5mm variants. They are easier to shoot well but the downside is shorter barrel life.

Thanks for sharing.

I would suggest you give some good thought to exactly what you want to do with the rifle & choose based on that.

If you are going to be shooting "PRS Style" competitions & want to be competitive, then all the cool folks are dropping out of the 6.5 CM and are now into the various 6mm variants. In those ranges the .308 is not even really a mention.

If you want to do long distance shooting, a lot depends on what "longer ranges" means to you. Once you start getting around the 1k mark, unless you are custom loading the expensive flatlines, you'll probably have a much easier time with something like a 6.5CM, which can also pull duty for competitions.

.308 is fine & is a great all around cartridge. But it doesn't excel at either competition or long range shooting.
Up close, like in the 500 yard range, you can get excellent results with it, using light fast bullets.

It may also depend on what your budget is.

If you have a pretty hefty budget, I'd probably suggest waiting to pick up one of the Hoplite rifles that @THEIS is making as you'll have a lot of options with excellent customer service, and a top notch product. He has lots of standard cartridge options & then lots of high speed proprietary options coming out as well as the choice of traditional stock or AR style stock.
