Looking to build a 16" general purpose ar15.

Hoping to use this as a ranch gun as well as a midrange rifle. Wanting to practice using some iron sights and positional shooting as well.

I'm thinking RRA two stage lower
WOA 16" barrel
RR upper
BCM Bolt carrier group.

some sort of free float rail etc..

Originally I wanted a SDM style rifle but think the 20" barrel would just be to long for most other things.

Rifle will be used for coyotes/pigs/games and also out to 500 yards +-

suggestions?

Re: Lets build me an AR15

I did a Spikes/Stag AR-15 with RR 2-stage trigger. Very happy with it. You can probably find a better upper, but I like the Stag for the price.

Re: Lets build me an AR15

If you plan to shoot irons out to 500 I would get a barrel mounted FSB and try to get the longest sight radius possible.

Not sure if a 16" works with rifle gas, but several companies offer 17" or 18" barrels with rifle gas. One of those will get you another 2" of sight radius.

Another option is to get one of Noveske's "Irons" barrels.

I think he might be hinting at something. Give him a call. I'm sure he'll take care of you. The Hide does a good job selecting their vendors.

16" middy is great. For irons I prefer a standard FSB and a solid rear like Larue BUIS. If you want a folder, Troy is fine, but next time I'm going to try a KAC micro 200-600. On the trigger, no need to go anywhere but Geissele, period. BCM is excellent choice for all of the upper supplies. If you must have a longer sight radius, you could shave the FSB (or install a lo-pro) and add a longer rail to go over.

Re: Lets build me an AR15

it was at least a subtle hint wasn't it? LOL

There are other folks who build AR's on there, but I do like to support the vendors on a site that i frequent.

I'm not one of those self promoting, you gotta buy from me, but on the other hand, i do get a lot of repeat customers and get a good number of requests from Hide members.

Good luck to you whoever you do choose, I'm always available for any questions that you might have.

Re: Lets build me an AR15

Don't know what your budget is, but for 1100-1200 you can build a very nice AR... I just built one (keep in mind that you don't need to have certain things like the Magpul UBR stock which added $200). you can build it yourself, its not hard... i learned from watching youtube online and reading online (http://www.midwayusa.com/Static/ar-15VarmintRifleInstructions.aspx was a great resource).

The AR I just build has the following: daniel defense upper ($115), daniel defense cold hammer forged barrel (top of the line - $250), Adams Arms piston conversion system ($280 or so, there is controversy over this, but is known to make system run cleaner, cooler, and smoother: includes gas block, gas tube, hand guards, bolt carrier group <minus bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and retaining pin>) featuring a lewis machine and tool bolt ($60), Magpul flip up sights (~$90, nice if you want to use optics with iron sights, but don't know how well they would work at 500 yards, you cannot adjust rear sight to compensate for distance), Aero precision mil-spec lower (can get one without stock for $130 prior to ffl fee, figure on another $50-60 for a basic stock), Magpul UBR stock (~$200), dark earth hogue grip to match stock ($20). The only other things you would need to add to this order would be a charging handle (~$20), flash hider (~10), bolt parts (cam pin etc. ~$15), one point sling (would recommend condor as it is very comfortable and good price - $30).

If you want a quad rail, it seems to me that troy industries makes good quality ones for a great price. The piston system will only cost a total of about $100 more if you are building it from scratch. check out the article above to see what you will need to build it... basically all you need other than some basic tools is a vice, a vice block ($40) and a take down wrench ($20-40), but then you can build all the AR's you want! =) hope I helped!

ps. some of the best prices I have found have been at www.westernsportonline.com, where Justin will hook you up (I got everything except lower from him), and https://eagleeyebigsky.com which is where I got my lower from... great price and Jason was great to work with!

Re: Lets build me an AR15

Guys thanks for the info so far.

I'm not a fan of gas piston systems and I'd like to look at building this one up myself. The 20" barrel is just to long for waht I'm wantingto do. I had an 18 with an A2 stock and it was slightly to long.

I do like the UBR and the JP foreend. WOA seems to have a real solid rep as far as accuracy. Gissele or JP seems to be the go to trigger systems.

I'm still piecing it together.........

I do appreciate the input from vendors here and will be shopping with them for the parts needed! Thanks again!

Re: Lets build me an AR15

I built an AR based on a Krieger mid-length 16" Recon barrel, pretty light profile actually, set up for the OPS 12th suppressor. It took just over 100 rounds till it settled down, and now is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever had.

It seems like everywhere it goes, it is the best shooting AR there, according to shooters more skilled than myself.
A Marine sniper instructor shot 500 yard groups, BH 77gr ammo, 12th, prone, bipod, rear bag, that were equal to his M24 issue weapon. Buy the best barrel you can afford, it does make a difference.
