So I was talking to my agent that I have my home owners insurance through along with all my vehicles and he informed me since I want to build rifles out of my shop as a business that they will not cover the building anymore. So I said to him let me get this straight if I build rifles as a hobby and the building caught fire you would cover it and his response was yes. So I than mentioned so since I would be doing this as a business you will not cover it and he said that is correct. Their BS answer was because of Liability and I mentioned I could get the liability through the NRA. My agent’s response was what is the big deal if you have to pay more for insurance if we do not cover the building if it is a business that makes money it should not be a big deal to cover the cost. I can tell the prick knows nothing about what it costs to do this type of work with equipment and tooling costs. So I contacted the NRA and for their liability coverage without the building is 840 a year. Now since I have to cover the building they are working a quote for me but it could be double or triple that amount. So my question is what are you guys doing for insurance and is there a company that you would recommend? I think I need to change anyway since mine seems not to be pro gun from the conversation I had. If you do not feel comfortable discussing it in public please send me a pm.

Re: Lets Talk Insurance

Your best bet is to find an agent willing to work with you. Some Farm Bureau agents can find coverage of the type you need, but you can go to the one in the next town and he doesn't seem to be able to help.

This has been my experience.

Re: Lets Talk Insurance

I got this name off of the NRA site and a few others I sent out emails to 3 insurance brokers who claimed specialization in the firearms industry and only Trent got back in touch with me, within the day. I talked to him about our needs and he will be working up a quote for us in the near future.

Here is Trent's full contact information:

Re: Lets Talk Insurance

Any business like that run out of your home is likely to result in different/higher insurance, so I wouldn't be so quick to jump on your current agent. Plus, you know he's not the one making the decision, it's the insurance company/underwriter.

Might as well call a few insurance companies (State Farm, etc.) and see who makes you the best deal.

Re: Lets Talk Insurance

You have to speak to a commercial lines agent. If you are running a business not only will you want your building/equipment covered by a commercial policy but also expand your liability coverage. Why don't you call or PM Chad Dixon or Robert or one of the other smith's on the board and get some direction from them?
