When installing a Leupold 2-piece base on my remington 700 hunting rifle, the rear base won't allow the bolt to close. What am I doing wrong?

Screws are too long for sure!You can file or sand them down,but go slow as the material comes off faster than you think.BTDT Pete

Before you start filing make sure that one or more screws isn't shorter?

It's not the screws, it's the base itself- it's too long, and the rear of it extends past the rear edge of the receiver!

A picture would help. Which Leupold Base? Old style Turn in, Double dovetail, QRW, MK4, QR? Me thinks you might have it on backwards. Perhaps if you turn the rear base around? On some Leupold bases the rear base extends over the receiver port opening on purpose. If you mount it the wrong way it will block the bolt....
Have you even called Leupold and asked @ 1-800-LEUPOLD ???
That should be your first action.... if you want a solution here it would be most helpful to post a picture; without it is hard for anybody to be sure what your problem really is.

Yeah Bob, it extends over the receiver port, but the Leupold instructions say to mount it the other way, where it blocks the bolt. It's the leupold STD rear base, with the windage screws. I'll call Leupold tomorrow.
