I have a Leupold dual dovetail base for a Remington 700 SA. There are four screws to secure the base to the rifle. Two are short. Two are long. Which screws go where?

Can someone help me!.. I hope! Thanks

Re: Leupold dual dovetail base screw Question/Help-

You need at least one short one on the very front hole, so that you don't bottom on the barrel threads before the base is tight. Hope this helps.

I can't remember but I think it will be obvious on the rear if you look at the depth of the holes in the base. I believe one will need a longer screw when looking at protrusion out the bottom of the base with the screws in place. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Leupold dual dovetail base screw Question/Help-

Just remove the bolt and do trial by error. The shorter ones will probably be for the front base due to the barrel threads as was already stated. Put the longer ones in the rear base and see if they protrude down into the receiver. Most likely they wont. If you put the longer ones in the front base, the front screw will probably bottom out before it secures the base down and you'll end up stripping threads in an attempt to tighten that base down. Watch for the clearance of the rear screw on the front base. That screw, if too long, can interfere with the left lug when the bolt is closed. Basically, trial by error while watching for which screws give you good thread engagement without sticking through and causing a problem.
