Same specs. Which brand and why? I grew up using Leupold but alot of my friends say if they could afford it they would get US Optics. Yet none can give me a good reason to spend the extra money. I'm gonna be getting it in about 2 months I can afford either so, just thought you guys would have some good input.

BTW love this forum....

No good reason to spend the extra money for US Optics???

Choice of Reticles 2x MOA or 3x Mils
Choice of adjustments MOA or Mils
Choice of size/shape of elevation knobs
Choice of different windage knobs
Choice of Parallax controls on some models ( Ergo or T-pal or none)
Choice of illumination, red or green, or whether to have it at all.
Choice of tube diameter on some models (30mm, 34mm or 35mm)
Choice of Objective size on some models (37mm or 44mm or 58mm)
Choice of tube color (Black, Green, Brown, Gray, Robar, or Cerakote)

Need I go on....

Can you call Leupold and speak to the owner of the company directly? I called and spoke to USO's HNIC last week.

Plus what Bob said...

Re: Leupold or US Optics

If money is not an object to you, buy the USO. If they are not what you want, get Nightforce.

Leupold makes an alright scope but it is far overpriced for what it is IMHO. The others are far superior both in choices of spec and quality of materials.

Leupold's service isn't what it once was either. If you get a USO you will have the satisfaction of knowing you can remove it from the gun and use it as a bludgeon... and that it is covered by one of the best warranties in the business from good people who will take care of you.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

Leupold are nice scopes but if it is between a USO and a Leupold then the USO. If you got your hands on a USO you would see why really fast. I use both Leupold and USO, they both have served me very well.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I have used both, but if I had to choose between the two, I have to give my vote to a USO. As it has been said by others here, save up a little more and get exactly what you want. USO gives you that option with a butt load of options, not to mention they are great people to deal with.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

Here's what you do, buy them both and beat them against each other until one breaks. Then send the Leu...umm...the broken scope back.

USO. Slam dunk.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I say leupold I have 3 mark 4's and never had a single problem. But if you want to throw your scope up in the air multiple times for some reason, you would probably be more happy with uso .

Or if you appreciate reticles that aren't canted.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

Night force.. Nuff said.. USO is just a look at what I got optic..
NF is just a good with out spending the extra $2 to $3k on one.

Really???? Let's try an apples to apple comparison:

NF F1 3-15x50MM $2190. MIL/MIL w/Zero stop, MLR reticle

SN3-1750 3.2-17X
# Base price $2225
# No options selected.
# T-Pal Left - Standard Option
# 44mm - Standard Option
# U.S. #1 1/10 MIL - Standard Option
# U.S. #1 1/10 MIL - Standard Option
# 30mm - Standard Option
# Matte Black Type III Hard Anodizing - Standard Option
# Mil-Scale GAP - 86.00
# 11 Pos Rheostat (Red) - 185.00
# No Eyepiece Housing selected.
# Rapid Focus - Standard Option

$2496.

Yea, there is a whole world of difference in price. You got me sold.........None of this says that NF is somehow bad, and USO all good, but to say there is a $2 to 3K difference is delusional, when comparing like features/values.

USO is "Just a look at what I got Optic"? Sounds like a bit of jealousy and sour grapes.

I had a NF,used it for two weeks and sold it,nothing wrong with it,just not for me.I fired it side by side with a friends USO,the USO won hands down for me.

If a guy really wanted to "Showboat",a top line Hensoldt is less than $1500 more than the top line NF

And that would not be Showboating, you get what you pay for

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I generally do not jump into the scope/optic pissing contests here but due to my lack of discipline today for some reason here is what I think:

First ask yourself what is the scope to be used for KD,UKD, field use, range use, safe queen, price range limits, whatever?

Then do your homework and sample those YOU think fit your use best.

My/our opinion for the best really does not matter other than getting you to think, it is your choice.

To compare NF and USO really is apples and oranges, up to and until NF stopped dragging its feet on a FFP piece of glass. Luppy's are great for "soft" use, in hard field use I have seen more than a few go tits up. But really ALL are manmade and every one can go bad no matter how much you paid for it.

I posted awhile back on scope perfection here is the link:

Scope perfection the Myth

Agree with the above. Since money isn't a problem I'd choose the USO.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

This is pure comedy.

It is seriously like someone asking you...

Sir, would you rather eat this 6 inch long dog turd or this butterfinger candy bar.

THERE IS NO COMPARISON between these two manufacturers products. I would take a used and abused USO any day over a brand new mk4 and I HAVE THEM BOTH.

I cant afford to put USO on everything I own but I am giving it an honest try with 4 so far. NF is the same in my opinion. I had one of their scopes as well but recently sold it. The NXS was a Great scope but NO COMPARISON to uso.

Not FFP, Not built to my specs, no 35mm tube, no erek, no 58mm objective, not as high quality, no where near the options, and no where near the price of my 5-25 TPAL

The NXS was alot of things but one thing it was not is comparable to a USO anything in my opinion. Or about as comparable as dog shit and a candybar anyway.

(Looks in shorts, damn I got gyped)

I'm just a newb and a hack.

My past experiences were with leopold mil dot police scopes of the old Vari III series.

My first real up grade was a USO SN3 3.2-17x44. I ordered it myself and made some mistakes in hindsight. Standard mil dot reticle, stayed with mil dot reticle and stayed with 1/4 moa adjustment. That's the one I kick myself for. I didn't want to change from what (I thought) I knew. Also in hindsight I should have gone up in power and gone into the twenty something power range.

My USO was not as bright and clear as I expected and my reticle wasn't as black as it should be. My reticle is actually a bit transparent and appears sepia brown if you look at it. I should have at least called them to discuss the matter but did not.

Since then I built 2 more rifles and went with a NF 3.5-22x50mm with the MLR and mil turrets. I found my NF was brighter and sharper and it had more power for my paper games at the club. I ended up buying a second NF of the same spec and replaced the USO on my .308 rifle.

Granted my experience and sample size is very small.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I have had a good many Leupolds over the years with very good service and still have a few on various stuff. I run USO's on my serious bolt guns. If you just need a decent scope get the Leupold....if you need an order the way you want it, drive a nail tough, repeatably dial your turrets again and again, etc scope definitely buy the USO. I like the NF's I have shot as well but the USO has the features and reticles I prefer and I love the EREK.

I prefer FFP for my ranging reticles and until recently that meant no NF or Leupold.

If you want advice that is useful we need more information, for example: SFP or FFP Leupold? Because I would calibrate the reticle of a SFP Leupold against the hard stop before I mounted it. The USO would get mounted and checked later at the range.

Actually your sample size is very small... I've had 5 NF's and 4 USO's. I like NF scopes, for good glass on a budget their my choice. But there's no way I'd ever choose a NF over USO, based on my sample, unless budget was involved.......

Never needed a scope to be a bludgeon, a good pipe or rock has always sufficed, but ditto the superior warrenty of USO nonetheless!

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I just picked up my first USO, and I have to say I am nothing but impressed. I have been partial to NF, and still really like what they have to offer. However, the USO has some features that are very unique from the scopes that I have put my hands on. The USO just feels like a tough, rugged scope. The magnification dial is smooth as silk and a little oversized compared to some that I have grabbed. This seems to make it easy to manipulate. The EREK knob is easy to grasp as well and a nice feature. I don't say any of this to down NF as I currently have a second NXS on order with the new turrets, but the USO is a fine scope. I must admit, I did have to ask myself initially if it was worth all the money that I paid for it. After having it for a few days, I feel like it was. If you have the money and want the USO, you will not be disappointed. I have had nothing but outstanding customer service from both NF and USO.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

I agree, hilarious. WOW how guys get fired up defending their OPINION on optics, at the end of the day that's what they are, opinions. I personally would buy what I can afford and what works for me, take input to help but not to decide for me. I'd use a paper towel role with two pubes shoe goo'd into it if it made me hit the target, sure the guys on the line would laugh at you but hey, all the better when you spank their ass.

I think of scopes as what they are, reticle holders. my opinion is get what you get from a "big name" company, you can always send it back, refund it, get it worked on, sell it, trade it, or use it as a hammer. Point being trial and error to form my own opinions has generally worked for me.

Re: Leupold or US Optics

Why spend 'extra' money on US Optics:

Buy an SN4, place it on an M16, deploy to Afghanistan for one year. Beat the scope up and it still works, get back home, and ask if you can send it in to have:

reticle fixed

22mm front OBJ tube re rounded because it got knocked out of round bashing on a haji truck bumper chasing the haji

Basic clean up to get the fine powdery dust out of the tiny places

US Optics: FREE of charge, AND, 'Would you like this replaced with a new scope so we can add this one to our 'combat vet' collection "Hell Yeah!"

Leupold: My bet is htey would charge for all that and not replace the scope with a new one

You want teh best damn Customer Service/Warranty in the business, stop whining about cost and spend the cash on a damn good scope that will serve most people here for the rest of their lives, and the guys who take them to war and bring them back beat up, well see the above once again to refresh your memory on why to Bite the bullet and buy great and cry once
