I'm looking for a new scope and I'm thinking about the Leupold
3.5-14x50 with the TMR or the Nightforce 4-15x50 with the NP-R1.

I'm sure you guys have some opinions on the difference between these recitals and which one is the best so lets hear them.

The scope will be going on a Savage 10FP and I'd like to use it for some hunting but mostly a little long distance shooting out as far as I can hit some thing with a 308.

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

The TMR is mil based, and the NP-R1 is moa based.
A lot of people here prefer the mil system over the latter.
I personally have the NP-R1 and love it. That being said, if you decide you want to go mil, then definitely get the NF over the Leupold and get a mil-dot reticle.

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

I was thinking about the NP-R1 but I already have a super Sniper that is Mil dot and I didn't want to reconfigure my brain when I went out shooting one of my other rifles.

The TMR looked kind of busy but I figured a mil was a mil and you had to do a little math on either a mil dot or a moa

Is the TMR set up with the 1/2 mil hashes any easier to estimate distance?

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

I've got the 4.5 x 14 Leupold in TMR and a 5.5 x 22 NF with the NP R1. It really isn't much to switch between the two, there's really not a lot of difference for me. I should qualify that by saying that one is on a .223 AR and the other is on a .300 WM. They aren't competing platforms. However, I do like the glass on the Nightforce better. It is brighter in the dusk/dawn time frames when hunting is at its optimum. I really like the matching nobs on the NF scope, but I usually dial my dope for most shots, and mainly use the hash marks for windage anyway. If you're looking at a MK IV Leupold, and the price isn't much different, I'd strongly recommend the NF. I think it is worth a little more.

In my opinion, the 1/2 mil hashes do make it easier to estimate distance than a regular mil dot reticle. If 1 mil = 3.438 moa, then 1/2 mil = 1.7190 moa. With the NP R1, you've got 1 moa marks making the measurement (subjectively based upon skill) more accurate.

I don't think that either reticle is "busier" than the other. Neither is much different than a standard duplex in my opinion, yours may differ.

Good luck and happy shooting!

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

I had an NP R1 NXS, in the end I just found it way too thin. You're comparing Apples to Oranges though, or in this case a Mil reticle vs an MOA reticle. If you're trying to choose between Nightforce and Leupold, just get the NXS and get the MLR reticle with mil knobs.

Yep +1 </div></div>

Another +1 for the NF or a Vortex Razor

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

Nightforce is worth the money. I have nothing against Leupold and have one on a hunting rifle. With that being said it seems that Leupold is relying more and more on their name and less on their quality now days.

I am trying to chose between the Night force and the Leupold. I was leaning towards the NF but it was getting to be a toss up over the reticles. The NP-R1 does look a little thin but I figured it would be OK if it was illuminated. It also looked like it would give a clearer picture by not having the solid bars in it. The M4 looked like it might have a few to many hash marks.

Unfortunately there aren't any places out here to do any live comparisons of reticles

I had not really considered the MLR it looks as thin as the NP-R1

I have a VX3 in the shop at the moment. Thats how I got a bug up my but to get a new scope and if you get a scope you most certainly need a new rifle right?

Re: Leupold TMR or Night force NP-R1

The light just came on.

I got my mils and MOAs mixed up. Been looking at to many different scopes and reticles over the last couple of days. I completely overlooked the fact the NP-R1 is a MOA reticle. I was busy looking at the layout and hash marks and not the MOAs or the MILs
