I did search and found nada. I also seem to remember a mod kit to fix this problem, but can't remember if it was for Leupold or some other scope brand, nor can I find it. Anyway, the question/problem:

I have a Leupold Mark-IV M3, 3.5 - 10x 40mm, yadda, yadda, yadda. The elevation and windage knobs leave a lot to be desired (IMO) when it comes to registering definite "clicks" when changing elevation or wind. Sometimes it "clicks" and other times it "slimes". I can never really tell if I'm getting 3 clicks elevation or 2, or 2.5 or what...it's kinda like "<span style="font-style: italic">click, slime, click, click, slime, slime, slime, click</span>" etc.

Has anyone else had this problem with either Leupold or any other scopes, and is there a fix? Is it all in my head? The scope has only been on the rifle for ~260 rounds, so it's pretty dang new. Oh, and please either keep the "<span style="font-style: italic">Leupolds suck</span>" comments to yourself, or get it out of the way first before helping me!

    Thanks!

Early examples of the Premier Reticles Heritage scopes did not have crisp clicks in some situations, a problem which was fixed by a minor change in design, discussed on this site. Replacement kits are available for those scopes.

Leupold scopes carry a lifetime warranty. If you are having trouble with the erector system in one of their scopes, I recommend contacting them. Their customer service has an excellent reputation.

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

I was looking at three variations of Mark IVs (M1s) at Cabela's this past week and noticed what you are talking about on two of the three models. The three were 4.5-14, 6-20, and 8.5-25. The clicks were excellent on the 6-20 and lack luster on the other two. Coincidentally, the glass was much better in the 6-20 as well- albeit hard to discern in the store.

I have had great customer service through Leupold, the one time it was needed. I suspect they would take care of you as well. Keep us informed, Thanks

OK, send it back to Leupold's service department. They are excellent and will fix it......they get ALOT of practice. IS THAT satisfactory advice?

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

I have a MK4-M3 and I know what you mean...the clicks feel "soft". That said, they're very accurate nontheless. I don't know where you're at but I find that the clicks soften when its very cold and seem more normal when it warms up.

That's what I'm hoping, since it's a new scope. It was cold the other day when I shot, and I hadn't shot since last August, and it was hot then, but I don't recall if the clicks were better. I'd just like to hear and feel a good solid "CLICK" when turning. Thanks.

Mine is new too. Here in NE Florida its been a very cold winter and I've been shooting on some days with temps in the mid 30's. Try it in your house with a warm scope. I can see a new turret being a bit tight. I've been practicing with rapid range changes on it and returns to zero and is very precise, so I'm not too concerned with it.

^ Good to know...thanks. I'll try it here shortly. I'm in CO by the way, so yeah, I mostly shoot in cold weather!

MY ASS!! I'm vacationing in Orlando right now and I shit you not, 3 days ago I shoveled my quad out of 2.5' of snow in my native northeast PA...

Your "winter" is "spring" to us son!!! LOL!!!

PS. Love this area, your state is beautiful! The wife and I's hotel is 10 minutes from Universal Studios and not 5 minutes from SeaWorld. I <span style="text-decoration: underline">just</span> got out of a pool and it's 10:35 at night, I guess 72 degrees must kill the natives but not someone who has 2' of snow on his lawn... still...

I from your neck of the woods (Pottsville) so been there, done that. I personally think its colder here during a winter like the one we've just had for one reason...we have absolutely no winter clothes

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

I have experienced the EXACT problem you're talking about on my Super Sniper 10x. This info may or may not help depending on how the knobs come off. I degreased the inside of the knob and LIGHTLY lubed it with some thinner grease....like the kind you use to lube gun components. There was an immediate change in the "clicks". They are crisp and audible. I have to do this about once a year.

Nothing wrong with sending it back to Leupold in case there really is a problem. I think sometimes they just put a glob of grease on components in mass production. You're basically re-doing it right.

    -Erik

*edited to add* I found it was the o-ring "grabbing" the inside of the knob causing it to feel slimey instead of allowing the inner components to give you the "click" you're looking for.

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

Well, I had it out last night in the basement for dry firing practice and decided to mess with the scope. When going from zero, up through 55 MOA on the scope, there were audible clicks and they were concise and right on in line with the tick marks, but they're so quiet I could never hear them on the range with hearing protection. On the way back down, the clicks were not as audible or concise with the tick marks. From 55MOA to about 20MOA they weren't very good, but below 20 I could hear them again and they were consistent with the tick marks. ???

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

This is interesting info. I was looking at a Leupold Mark IV. With these comments, and Lindy's comments about the clicks being actually closer to IPHY instead of MIL's I guess I need to be careful in choosing my next scope.

Depending on the type of shooting you'll be doing I wouldn't write it off. I think it's a great scope at a great price and is very easy to shoot/learn. Clicks are 1 MOA for elevation and 1/2 MOA for windage but it comes with engraved BCD turrets for several different rounds which make elevation changes almost dummyproof...just select the distance, and elevation is spot-on. I have a USO on order for a M1A build but my MK4 will be a permanent fixture on my SASS given that it will likely never shoot beyond 600 yds.

    Re: Leupold Turret Knob "clicks"?

I thoguht the lack of "click" to leupold scopes was due to the double o-ring configuration that they use.... I'm not going to jump on the "I hate Leupold" wagon because I find their products to work fine (worked fine for me overseas) send it back and have em take a look.

You're exactly right. It is an o-ring thing. Mine has been loosening with use.
