Has anyone ever sent in there scope back to Leupold to get it upgraded? I have a couple of VX-3's that I would like to have a different reticle put in and have the turrets changed to the external type M-1 or M-4. I couldn't find anything on there website in regards to this type of work. Is this cost effective or am I just better off buyin a M-4? Thanks for the help.

Re: Leupold Upgrade

This might not help much but here is mine with M1 knobs from the custom shop. Just wanted to show you that it can be done and the end result it great.

I am not sure what the conversion cost though. I bought it from the original owner who had it done.

Thanks for the info! I went to there website but couldn't find anything specific to scope upgrades just custom scopes. I'll try giving them a call.

Thanks for the picture Bighouse, I really appreciate it. I have a 1.5-5x just like that and been looking at putting an M1 elevation knob on it with BDC for use on an AR-15. Was wondering what it would look like....and you posted it!

Thanks again!

Re: Leupold Upgrade

I sent and older Vari X III in and had the TMR reticle installed for $160. The upgrade the M1 Elevation (only) turret was $90.

Those prices were quoted to me on 18 JUN 09.

I'm very pleased.

Changing the knobs are easy. Even third party vendors supply those such as this one:

How easy is it to change Knobs, I have a couple scopes i would like to Put an M1 Turret On instead of a coin slot type.

Re: Leupold Upgrade

FYI I just got back a email from Garth at Leupold today. They quoted me $160 to install windage and elevation M-1 turrets on a VX-3 LRT. There current turnaround is running three weeks.

Depends on the scope. Not sure if the coin slot type knobs are upgradeable. You can see on the Kenton Industry website that they make knobs for specific scopes but not all scopes. You can read their FAQ here:
http://www.kentonindustries.com/faq/

If your scope is on there, it is normally unscrewing the hex keys and removing the oem knob. Then pushing on the new turret and screwing back in the hex keys.

Re: Leupold Upgrade

If you install the knobs from a source other than leupold would it void warranty on the whole scope or would you just reinstall the originals if any service needed done?

Re: Leupold Upgrade

There are two different issues here, which you need to be clear about.

If you send a scope to Leupold for a change from M3 or M2 knobs to M1 knobs, they are changing out the scope internals so that the click values correspond to the new knob.

Kenton industries and similar places are selling you a knob with a different marking scheme on it, which does not change the value of the internal clicks. As Boltripper notes, put the original knobs back on if you later send it to Leupold.

Just replacing a knob by undoing the set screws and slipping on the new knob will not void the warranty on the scope. Messing with scope internals likely will, unless the work is done by Leupold, or authorized by them.

Re: Leupold Upgrade

That's a silly note. Leupolds have given lots of people good service - lots of game and lots of people have been killed with Leupold scopes.

They are well behind the curve in tactical products, in my opinion, but that doesn't mean the scopes are trash.
