Rifle Scopes Leupy MK4 Finicky Eye Position?

My issued rifle is equipped with a Leupold Mark 4 scope and I don't have the option of changing it.

I'm getting frustrated with what seems to be a finicky eye position for the scope. Not so much eye relief, but a very narrow "sweet spot" for POA to equal POI.

I stick an upholstry screw type tack into my stock pack so I get the same cheekweld each time in each position. Even though my cheekweld is the same, I find that I can barely change the amount of pressure I am putting on my stock with my cheek and I get slight scope shadow on one side or the other. A shot that feels good breaks just left or right of the POA. It doesn't happen every shot, but just enough to rattle my confidence in my rifle and abilities.

I don't seem to have this problem with my personal rifles and scopes. Is there anything that can be done with mounting of the scope to fix this?

I'm willing to try to move it foward or rearward if it will help. I just can't believe how little the amount of movement is required to induce the scope shadow.

Any suggestions or is it just a quirk I have to train through?

Re: Leupy MK4 Finicky Eye Position?

I run a leupy on my 700P. Usually when I start seeing something wierd in the scope it can be traced back to me. I would suggest starting with the basics. Since this is an issued weapon, I'm curious if it was originally set up for someone else? If so, the eye relief might not be right for you. Try moving the scope forward or backward until you have a full field of view with no shadow. Also, make sure your comb is in the right place to position your eye in the center of the eye box. If you're using a rifle without an adjustable comb, you may need to build up your stock with a cheek rest. If your eye is already too high, you might have to swap your rings for a higher set. You might also want to give Leupold a call to run this by them.

Thanks HRF, I'll play with the scope position and see if it changes. I'm sure it's more than likely me rather than the equipment, I've just never seen such a slight movement causing the shadow. Maybe I'm at the end of the eye relief and need to move closer. The rifle was issued to 2 other operators before being passed down to me.

The rifle wears a McCann Industries rail for use with a PVS22. I've got a stock riser pad (1" or so) and two stock packs to raise my eye to the right level. The biggest pain in the butt with that setup is having to remove all the stock packs to use the bore guide when cleaning....not a big deal though in the scheme of things.

I always struggle to find the sweet spot as well. I like the idea of a upholstery tack. What about a custom molded cheek "pad" for the comb? Has anyone seen this done?
